The Korean War began in 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea. The goal was for North Korea's idea of communism to spread into South Korea. This war was an example of a coup because a government was trying to replace another government. World leaders were scared about this invasion. In a "History.com" article it says "As far as they were concerned, this was not simply a border dispute between two unstable dictatorships on the other side of the globe. Instead, many feared it was the first step in a communist campaign to take over the world." (History, 2009)

The Korean war had no official winner. In a "Thought.Co" article it says "In terms of territory, the two Koreas returned essentially to their pre-war boundaries, with a demilitarized zone (DMZ) dividing them roughly along the 38th parallel. The civilians on each side truly lost the war, which resulted in millions of civilian deaths and economic devastation." (Szczepanksi, 2019) The US sided with South Korea obviously, but they avoided any true fighting because they feared the Soviets would retaliate because the Soviets sided with North Korea. In terms of our relationships, the US has a great relationship with South Korea and does not get along with North Korea at all.
