Subduction occurs below the North American plate to the north with shallow dips recorded here (07). In contrast, dips in the south are much larger (20 - 40) with subduction occurring below the Caribbean plate. Composition of the Caribbean plate is oceanic compared to the continental North American plate.
The shape of the subduction zone may also be affected by the geotherm varying in places (warm vs cool mantle) which will affect at what depth metamorphism to eclogitie occurs and the amount of slab pull.
