Padlet Questions

1.the setting is nick's house during this chapter cause the main thing is them all having tea together

2.the problem is that Gatsby realizes he can't get anywhere near Daisy or bring her anywhere close to him

3.the resolution was that Gatsby convinced Nick to invite Daisy and him over to make it look like they just want to have tea together

4.Gatsby and Dasiy reconnecting with eachother was a very important event in this chapter

5.Gatsby, Daisy and Nick are all important people during this chapter

6.They are important because Nick helps Gatsby and Daisy come back together, reuniting them at his house

7.A theme represented in this story is love because of Gatsby's undying love for Daisy. A good quote to show this is, "he hadn't once ceased looking at Daisy, and I think he revalued everything in his house according to the measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyes."

8.A good word for me to explain in this chapter is the word obstinate because the definiton is, stubbornly refusing to change one's opinion or chosen course of action, despite attempts to persuade one to do so. This word works with Gatsby and his character throughout the story

9.A figurative language used in this chapter is when Gatsby compares Daisy's voice to a "deathless song". saying it's immortal and soothing because of the way he has remembered it since they were split up and how it calms him no matter what

10.the author's purpose during this chapter is to show the importance of living in the present and not to grieve the past

Google Classroom Questions ...

1. What does Gatsby offer Nick in return for Nick’s cooperation in inviting Daisy to his

House?

Gatsby offered Nick a job on the selling bonds

2. What is the meeting between Gatsby and Daisy like initially?

Awkward at first because it’s been so long since the two had seen each other in years .

3. How are Daisy and Gatsby different when Nick returns to the house after a half an hour?

Their spark reflammed and they were getting back in the “zone” of how they used to be .

4. What are Gatsby’s feelings by the end of the chapter?

He seems happy because he finally after 5 years got to spend time with the love of his life

5. What does Gatsby reply when Nick asks him how he makes his money?

“thats my affair“ Why does Nick find that significant? It made Nick uneasy because that could only mean Gatsby was behind dirty work

6. Who is Klipspringer?

Is a pianist who resides in the Gatsby mansion from time to time

7. Early on Gatsby's dialogue is very tense and rude. Later on, after his private chat with Daisy, his dialogue becomes scatterbrained.

Daisy cries because she has never seen such beautiful shirts, and their appearance makes her emotional.

The weather in this chapter is misty and rainy. Which brings more emotion out.

The color green is traditionally associated with money, and the green light also symbolizes the wealth that Gatsby believes will enable him to win Daisy back from Tom.

The catalyst for his remembering is Jordan’s casual attitude towards dishonesty.

10. This figurative language helps the reader understand the Jazz age deeper.

16. What imagery is used in this chapter? The imagery helps the reader visualize what a party would look and feel like in the time period of the roaring twenties.

17. How does Nick characterize the guests at Gatsby’s party? What do his characterizations

tell us about how Nick feels about most of these people?

Nick characterizes the guest at Gatsby’s party as self- absorbed, shallow, and lacking in genuine connections. This reveals that Nick feels like these people are all living a lie and don’t actually deserve this superiority.

18. What sense of life in the Jazz Age do we get from the description of this party?

We sense that life in the Jazz Age consisted of excessive drinking, wild dancing, and wild/ careless behavior. We also sense that wealth had a lot to do with how one acted.

19.

What is the Valley of Ashes literally? Describe. It is the place where the motor-road and the railroad join side by side for a quarter of a mile.

Who or what is Dr. T. J. Eckleburg? What could he symbolize? It is a man painted onto a billboard that sits above the valley of ashes. The focus on the eyes and staring down at the people may represent god or some other higher power.

What is George Wilson’s occupation? Why does this matter? He is the owner of a run down gas station and auto shop in the valley of ashes. This matters so much because it shows how low class he is. Showing why his own wife despises him and cheats on him with Tom.

How does Nick feel about spending time with Tom and Myrtle? What does this show about him? What items does Myrtle purchase in the city? What could they symbolize about Myrtle? She buys a magazine, cold cream, perfume, and a puppy. These show she is materialistic and is most likely using Tom for his money.

How does Nick feel about spending time with Tom and Myrtle? What does this show about him? He is uncomfortable by it all, constantly wanting and trying to leave. It shows that he hates the ongoing infidelity, especially towards his own cousin Daisy.

Who is Catherine? What do you think her role in this scene is? Catherine is Myrtle’s sister. Her role is to keep the mood light and generally show how most people are okay with infidelity.

What effect does the change of dress have on Myrtle? What does this reveal about her? The outfit change greatly changes Myrtle’s personality. She goes from quiet and calm to loud, annoying, and rambunctious. Showing that she has no deeper meaning to her. That she is nothing but what she looks like.

How does Myrtle talk about the help at the hotel? Why is this significant? She talks about the help as if they were insignificant. Saying they are useless as she “has to do everything herself”. It is significant because it shows how shallow she is.

What rumor has Catherine heard about Gatsby? Do you believe this? She had heard that Gatsby was the nephew of Kaiser Wilhelm. Personally we do not believe this because gossip and rumors tend to be untrue unless specifically proven.

What information does Nick learn about the affair of Tom and Myrtle? Jordan reveals to Nick that Tom is having an affair with a woman named Myrtle Wilson. It is also shown in the chapter that Tom is abusive by breaking Myrtle's nose. This just plainly shows that Tom is also abusing Daisy.

At the end of this chapter, how do you feel about the people Nick is hanging out with? Why? How do you think Nick feels about them? How do you know this? We personally dislike the people he is around. These people are horrible and too materialistic to even be somewhat likable. We believe Nick isn't a fan of them either due to him constantly trying to leave and ignoring what they have to say.

Setting: The setting of chapter 2 is New York.

Problem: Everyone has kind of loose morals and Nick doesn't really agree with anybody.

Resolution: The "resolution" of this chapter is Tom breaking Myrtle's nose.

Important Events: Tom breaking Myrtle's nose, Nick meeting Myrtle and her husband George, and Nick being dragged across all of New York and learning about how materialistic Myrtle is.

Important People: The most important people in chapter 2 is Myrtle Wilson, George Wilson, Tom Buchanan, Nick Carraway.

Why are they Important? Nick is the narrator, Myrtle is the person Tom is cheating on Daisy with, George is Myrtle's wife and he is oblivious to the affair his wife is having, and Tom is cheating on his wife and breaks Myrtle's nose.

Theme with quote: "Beauty and the Beast... Loneliness... Old Grocery Horse... Brook'n Bridge..."

A word worth explaining: Flounced - Moving with exaggerated movement

Figurative or descriptive language: "But above the grey land and the spasms of bleak dust which drift endlessly over it, you perceive, after a moment, the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg. The eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg are blue and gigantic—their retinas are one yard high... But his eyes, dimmed a little by many paintless days under sun and rain, brood on over the solemn dumping ground."

Author's Purpose: Fitzgerald's purpose in this chapter was the show the differences in the morals of Nick and the other rich people.

1. Why does Nick move from Minnesota to New York? What is his vision of the American Dream?

Nick moved from Minnesota to New York because he wanted to join the bond business and his version of the American dream likely involves wealth and uniformity.

2. The first time Nick sees his neighbor, he is standing on his lawn, reaching his arm out toward the water in the bay. When Nick looks out at the water, all he sees is a distant green light which might mark the end of a dock. The first image of a character in a novel is significant. What thoughts do you have about Nick’s neighbor based on this scene?

I believe Nick’s neighbor to be mysterious and likely wanting something or waiting for something because of the way it’s described that he’s reaching towards the light.

3. What does Daisy’s statement, “I hope she’ll be a fool – that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool,” reveal about the way she views her own life?

This reveals that she views herself as a fool, which might be because she’s still with her husband even though she knows he’s cheating on her. It also shows that she sees her situation as a normal thing that girls will go through, which explains why she stays with him; because it’s what she views as being the right thing to do.

4. What do Daisy’s and Jordan’s statements about Tom reveal about him, and what do they reveal about Daisy? Explain your answer.

Daisy’s and Jordan’s statements about Tom reveal that he isn’t a very good person and is selfish. It reveals that Daisy is more of a superficial person who tries to focus on the shiny exterior of their lifestyle and keep that appearance up rather than the bad things that go on underneath. This is because they interact in a way that seems like they resent each other and they show this is when Daisy was just trying to go along with

5. What does Nick’s opinion of Tom and Daisy seem to be at this point in the novel?Support your answer.

Nick seems to think Tom and Daisy have a strange lifestyle and relationship. He initially seemed in awe of their wealth and just went along with their way of conversing. Though, the reader can infer from their later conversations how incompatible and different Tom’s what of life is different from

6. What is your opinion of Daisy Buchanan, based on what you have read so far? Explain your answer.

My personal opinion of Daisy Buchanan is that she’s a rich, mostly traditional, and somewhat eccentric woman.

Setting : Daisy and Tom's house

Problem : The conflict of chapter one is the awkwardness that Nick feels due to him having a different lifestyle and wealth to those around him, and the drama that occurs between them.

Resolution : This conflict is resolved by Nick going back home.

Important People : Daisy- Nick's second cousin who has a miserable life with Tom who is too self-absorbed to care for her or be loyal to her.

Tom- Daisy's husband, is a dominant man who lives in the East Egg (where the old money lives). He also has a mistress in New York.

Nick- Nick is the protagonist he came from the Midwest and he graduated from Yale alongside Tom (racist mistress beater).

Jordan- Daisy's best friend, catches Nick up on the rumors that have spread about Gatsby.

Gatsby- Nick (lover) sees him for the first time without knowing anything about him therefore, reaching out for the light foreshadows the future conflict with Daisy and their past relationship.

Important Events : Nick gives exposition about his life. The main action of the chapter starts when Nick goes to the Buchanan's house for dinner. When he arrives, he chats with Daisy and Tom and is introduced to Jordan, Daisy's best friend. Over dinner, Tom reveals his white supremacist opinions before taking a phone call from his "girl". This leaves Daisy to go on about her cynical worldview and leave the conversation in an emotional state. Jordan confirms that the phone call that Tom got was from his mistress in New York. When Nick goes back home to see Gatsby, a character mentioned earlier by Jordan, reaching out to a green light from across the bay.

Theme with quote : Wealth does not equate to happiness. "You see I think everything's terrible anyhow," she went on in a convinced way. "Everybody thinks so—the most advanced people. And I know. I've been everywhere and seen everything and done everything."

A word worth explaining : Deft - neatly, skillful, and quick in one's movements.

Author's Purpose : In Chapter 1 Fitzgerald sets exposition by introducing some of the main conflicts in the story, such as between Daisy and Tom who are unhappy with each other, and the affair Tom is having with women in New York. He also establishes that despite their wealth, the Buchanan are not the happiest people.

Figurative or descriptive language : "The lawn started at the beach and ran toward the front door for a quarter mile, jumping over sun-dials and brick walks and burning gardens - finally when it reached the house drifting up the side in bright vines as though from the momentum of its run. The front was broken by a line of French windows, glowing now with reflected gold, and wide open to the warm windy afternoon,".

The date at this point in the novel is July 5th, 1922 during the Roaring Twenties.

The people whom Nick encounters during the party are the regular partygoers.

The suggestion about Henry L. Plametto's death is that they are he committed suicide by jumping in front of a subway train.

The significance of that description would be to depict the extravagance of the things he owns.

Gatsby earned the "For Valour Extraordinary" medal from the country of Montenegro.

Gatsby tells Nick that Meyer Wolfsheim rigged the 1919 World Series.

Daisy's characteristics are very likable, and she has immense wealth from her marriage with Tom.

Gatsby has been pursuing Daisy for approximately 5 years, he thinks that Daisy is his "one true love".

Gatsby tells Nick that he came from a wealthy family, which we later find out that it was a lie.

Gatsby tells Nick that Meyer Wolfsheim fixed the World Series back in 1919.

Daisy was extremely intoxicated and was having second thoughts about her wedding.

Gatsby wants to reconnect with Daisy, but he's worried Nick would say no.

                  Interpreting Meanings

The evidence that points to Gatsby lying would be that he's from America, yet he went to Oggsford in England and that his words get caught in his throat when he tells the story.

Gatsby's friendship with Meyer Wolfsheim implies that he works in an underhanded capacity such as gambling.

The way that Daisy behaves after Gatsby goes overseas implies that she cares deeply about him, she is restless and reckless as well.

This metaphor explains that Nick didn't expect Gatsby to have a real goal in mind.

The phrase " "There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy, and the tired." implies there's rarely a time for peace in life.

A phrase that reflects the events in the story so far comes from a quote from Jordan: "There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy, and the tired."

Gatsby would likely agree with the phrase above, as he's been pursuing all his life and has met various amount of people.

Many stories about Gatsby's past could imply Gatsby being referred to as "Old Money" or him being referred to as "New Money". Some examples are that Gatsby claims to have inherited a large sum of money from his family's passing which would put him as "Old Money", but other people say he's a bootlegger, which would put him as "New Money".

                                    Padlet Questions

The setting is July 5th, 1922 at Gatsby's mansion.
2. The main problem of this chapter is that we do not know much about Gatsby and what he is doing, nor do we know what part of his past to truly believe.

3. We are still left with many questions about Gatsby, but we do find out that he has feelings for Daisy.
4. Some of the important events in this chapter are that Nick and Gatsby go for a drive, during which he reveals a lot about his past. Afterward, Gatsby and Nick run into Tom at a restaurant. In the conclusion of the chapter, Nick is asked by Gatsby to take Daisy over for tea at his house.
5. The most prominent character in the chapter, whom we haven't already met, is Meyer Wolfsheim, a somewhat infamous gambler.
6. Gatsby's connection with Meyer Wolfsheim hints at a darker "career path" that Gatsby took.
7. The quote that fits best with the theme of this chapter is, "And with this doubt, his whole statement fell to pieces and I wondered if there wasn't something a little sinister about him after all."
8. A good vocabulary word from this chapter is incredulous - (of a person or their manner) unwilling or unable to believe something.
9. A quote that has figurative language that uses the aforementioned word is, "My incredulity was submerged in fascination now; it was like skimming hastily through a dozen magazines."
10. The author's purpose of this quote is to make you trust and distrust Gatsby all at the same time.
