Trust vs. Mistrust

This is the first stage in Erikson's phycological development. This stage is very important because it will give the child a sense of trust or mistrust throughout their life. There are many negative side effects that can lead form mistrust. The better trust a child gains the more secure the child will feel. This stage can help children gain healthy and long relationships with others. During this stage, I was putting my trust in caregivers that were supporting me and keeping me safe. This made me grow a close connecting to family members, especially my parents. I gain trust instead of mistrust because of the way my family and parents took care of me as a child. Without this care as a child, the relationship we have would not be as close. "A healthy outcome during infancy, Erikson believed, depends on the quality of caregiving: relieving discomfort promptly and sensitively, holding the infant gently, waiting patiently until the baby has had enough milk, and weaning when the infant shows less interest in breast or bottle," (page 172). This statement shows that the more trust you have for someone as a young child, the healthier outcome. This comes from the quality of the caregiver.

This is the second stage of Erikson's phycological development. During this stage, it is important to allow the children to develop independency. This will help each child to grow older and develop more confidence in themselves in order to face the world. This comes from the guidance that is brought to the Childs attention. When I was a young child I was gaining self independence by making choices on my own with the help of guidance. This could be which shoe went on each foot. This guidance will because more and more relevant the older you get and the closer you get to adulthood. "When parents are over-or under controlling, the out-come is a child who feels forced and shamed and who doubts his ability to control impulses and act competently on his own," (page 173). This statement is relevant because without being able to make my own choices, I could have had a negative mind set about being forced or shamed.

This is the third stage of Erikson's phycological development. During this stage, children are very curious. Children tend to want to know more and ask many questions throughout this stage. I solved this crisis by asking many questions. I remember asking the most questions when my parents got divorced. During the divorce process, I asked my grandma the most questions. Obviously, I did not get the full answer to my questions, but I got enough information to feel like I learned something more. My main question used to be "why?" Every time something was said I used to continue to ask why about everything. I gained clarity as a child when my questions would be answered. This is " a time when children develop a confident self-image, more effective control over their emotions, new social skills, the foundations of morality, and firm beliefs about gender, which they apply to themselves," (page 246). As a child during this stage I developed a lot of skills that I later would continue to build on as I grew older. As a child, the topics listed in the quote really applied to me.

During this stage children are able to uses their skills and knowledge correctly. Typically during this stage is when children know right from wrong. Children during this stage like to take challenges to learn more from them, but at times will need some guidance with difficult challenges. During this crisis , I solved this by challenging myself and learning from mistakes. This could be in a school environment or at home learning. During this stage "children discover their own and others’ unique capacities, learn the value of division of labor, and develop a sense of moral commitment and responsibility," (page 321). This statement explains how children react in this stage. This shows that children do like to face challenges in order to understand what they already know, and then fix mistakes moving forward.

Identify vs. Role Confusion

During this stage, children are starting to learn about adulthood. During this stage, children are starting to use what they learned growing up and putting it into adulthood. Based on what each child learns when they are younger, will show what they are capable of during adulthood. This could mean how they solve problems, how they show emotions, or even how they view themselves. This stage is a stepping stool for adulthood. "If
young people’s earlier conflicts were resolved negatively or if society limits their choices to ones that do not match their abilities and desires, they may appear shallow, directionless, and unprepared for the challenges of adulthood," (page 398). This explains how previous stages can help children when they reach adulthood. When I was in this stage of my life, I solved this crisis by testing my limits. What I mean by this is that I would do something on my own and determine if it was appropriate, or if it was beneficial for me. I did this by using what I was taught in order to make my own designs.

Intimacy vs. Isolation

During this stage, we open ourselves up in order to form more intimate relationships. This is more directed to people outside of our family members. These relationship can lead to happiness, comfort, and safety. If these relationships do not go well, we can feel isolated after. This is never a good feeling for anyone, but during this process we learn and grow from the negative relationships. "Because of earlier disappointments, some individuals cannot form close bonds and remain isolated," (page 10). With this being said, some of these relationships can cause commitment issues. During this stage of my life, I solved this crisis by learning from relationships that did not work. Although I did isolate myself for a while, I found closure in myself and realized what I wanted in a relationship, and found it. I did not settle for anything less than I was looking for, because I did not want to end up in the same situation that I have before.

Generativity vs. Stagnation

This stage is during adulthood. During this stage, we give to the next generation by birth of children. This is an important stage because every parent wants to raise their children to be healthy and happy. Some parents may feel unaccomplished if their children are not healthy and happy. This stage is the pass down of what you know to your children, so they will learn the same as you did as a child. This stage "means giving to the next generation through child rearing, caring for others, or productive work, (page 10). During this stage of my life, I will solve this crisis by raising my children the same way my parents raised me. This statement is valid because I want to eventually raise my children with all of the topics listed.

Integrity vs. Despair

This is the final stage of Erikson's psychosocial stages. This stage is supposed to be a celebration of all the accomplishments made in life. If this stage is not a celebration it would be a despair. Once you reach this stage you want to be able to say that you are satisfied with the life you lived. I look at this stage as a make or break stage. You will either sit with integrity about the life you live, or you will sit with regret about the life you lived. You only have one life, live it they way you want to. "Integrity results from feeling that life was worth living as it happened, (page 10). This statement is important because it explains how you should look at your life. When I reach this stage, I plan to solve this crisis by being proud of what I did in life. I also want to look back at my life and be proud of where I stood during throughout my life.
