Developing their scientific inquiry abilities in an authentic way, not just following the chart and learning the terms. 

There are a variety of things students might be interested in. They may want to learn about the living critters in the garden. What kind of bugs are there and why. Or if there isn't a kind of bug they want how could they attract it? Maybe they want birds or butterflies. Their desire will spark their natural curiosity to research and learn about their question. It's a great extension for being a resident expert. The students design a center to share their knowledge in a way that allows other students to learn the same content.

  • Time:    extension activity after edible garden unit
  • Who:   students who satisfactorily complete the unit requirements
  • Grading:   ungraded, displayed on classroom bulletin board.
  • Differentiation:   Students do not require language skills in order to complete the project. The task can be as detailed as the student chooses.
  • Access:  Students who complete the unit. The option could be left out until those students who began the project could finish it. I wouldn't allow students to choose this center after the unit was completed. It would only be a completion option after the unit concluded.
  • Space:  art tub on a shelf.

Often in watercolor paintings. The drawing must be scientifically accurate. 

    OBJECTIVE: You will create a drawing of one of the provided plants. Use any of the supplies in the art bucket. 
    DIRECTIONS: 
    1. Keep your work in the unfinished art folder. 
    2. Select a plant from the ones provided. Draw with as much detail as you can. 
    3. Once completed your work will be pinned on the bulletin board for others to identify your plant. 

    MATERIALS:
    fine tip drawing pens
    soft drawing pencils
    erasers
    heavy water color paper
    water color pallets
    mixing trays
    water cups
    paint brushes
    pressed plants from school grounds (another option- students pick and press their own plant)
    folders for storage
    large tub to hold supplies
