Society needs people who are different from each other, not following others, which allows you to reach new goals. Hearing from a different drum just means learning things from a new perspective.

Transcendentalism
By, Lucia Perillo

When teachers are forced to teach students by a certain standard rather than what they know, students tend to get educated in the wrong direction rather than preparing you for the real world. This is exactly what happened in this poem. This student walks himself out of the classroom and goes to the woods where he learns to survive independently. The forest shows him a different perspective of the world where he lives a simple lifestyle realizing that material goods are not always necessary for yourself. This is what Thoreau has always preached about and it leads the student to a better life.
