With unknown details on where my grandparents Santiago and Yolanda grew up, they met whn they were just 9 years old. At the age of 12 they decided to be together. Unfortunelty my great grandmother Hermina did not approve of this relationship. My grandfathers parents were upset that my great grandmother was trying to keep them away from each other. They thought it would be a great idea for my grandpa Santiago and grandma Yolanda to move to a small ranch called “La Barca”. Thinking that the plan would go perfect, my great grandmother did not let my grandma leave… Yolanda and Santiago, both devastated thinking they would never see each other due to the move. Months went by, no cellular contact but only letters being sent. After 6 month of being apart, my grandma got the courage to tell my great grandfather how she felt about my grandpa Santiago and he let her move without my great grandmother knowing. Her arrival lead to the decision that they should come to the United States. Just like any other family trying to cross the boarder, there were so many risks they were going to come across. They knew they wanted a family and a better life for them so in 19670 my grandmother came to the United States with a US permit. And my grandfather had to cross The Arizona Desert.

On June 27, 1980 my grandpa Bonifasio was forced to move to the United States due to his family not wanting him to be with my grandma Ana Bertha. His family forced him to get a Visa and say he was moving for a job he got. For months they were path extremely devastated as they were a separated family. My grandma spent many nights up trying to find ways where she can get her and my mom who was only 4 years old at the time, to the United States. Everything seemed too expensive or too dangerous. After months of being separated my grandma made the hardest decision of her life, , and that was to pay a man help them cross the boarder. On December 14, 1980 my grandma asked a friend of hers to please help her get my mom to the United States by pretending she was their daughter by using her birth certificate that stated she was a US Citizen. They agreeed to help my grandma but there was always that chance of getting caught or my grandma never seeing her daughter again. During that time there were no phones and it was so hard to get in contact with anyone. My grandma told my grandpa what her plan was and they hoped and prayed that they arrived safely.

My grandma ran for her life and had no choice but to jump over the wall.. with gods help she made it over the wall safely and went to the location her and her friend agreed to, so she can get her daughter. They agreed on a certain time and told each other that they would only wait for 2 hours because if they stood at one location for too long it would look suspicious. My grandma waited and waited but it they weren’t arriving. My grandma cried and cried regretting her decision thinking she had lost her only child.. As sh cried on the floor, a car began honking and it was her friend, my grandma ran to their car and found her daughter there, safe and sound asleep. They picked up my grandma and gave them a ride to where my grandfather was staying.

The Sanchez Family all reunited, it seemed like nothing could ever go wrong until, my grandpa began becoming abusive and unlovable to my grandma. From family nights out to my grandma out in the middle of the night with her 5 year lad daughter looking for my grandpa. The perfect family that made it to the United State became a broken family. With so cut love my for my grandpa, my grandma did not want to leave him. She knew she needed to, but what kept her there was the money she would lose if she ever left him. She did not know how she was going to be able to take care of a child so she had to stay. 5 years later, and many women later my grandma was expecting her second child. Another baby girl, she thought that if she kept this baby he would change. But the abuse only got worse. My grandma began working days and nights tryin to save money to be able to leave my grandpa one day but something always stopped her. Another 5 years went by and my grandma was expecting again, this time with twins. 2 baby girls. My grandmas pregnancy was horrible. Not only was she carrying 2 babies but my grandpa began pushing her around to the point where she almost lost the babies. She knew once she had them she needed to leave for good. And she finally did.

As scared as she was because she had 4 little girls she needed to take care of, my grandma worked 3 lbs. By this time her first daughter was old enough to help out. She took care of all her little sisters while her mo worked.

They arrived to the United States and found a small back house they were able to rent out. My grandparents both struggled finding jobs that would trust newly immigrated people. They began to worry how they would be able to afford food and the rent that quickly came up. Not being able to find anything in the East Los Angeles area they began looking for part time jobs out in Bakersfield. Unfortunately this job was considered on call and would only offer work months at a time. This caused my grandparents to move all the time. As the years wet by and my grandparents got used to moving so frequently, they finally decided to have children. In 1973 they had her first boy, Santiago. 3 months after Santiago was born, they were expecting their second child, Gustavo which is my dad. While still needing to make ends meet they continued to work and had the boys move everywhere with them till the age of 10. My grandparents were lucky enough to find a full time produce job in Los Angles. They rented out a back house where my great grandma hermina and great grandpa Elidio bought the house in the front. It was perfect as everyone was together.

Recipe :

Quail

Lemon

Onions

Chicken powder

Oil

As the years went by and the Campos family got bigger, bringing recipes from La Barca was something that made my family feel at home. My grandfathers favorite thing to eat was Quail. They would prep the quail during the day and grill them at night. As the amply got bigger my grandfather felt that grilling the quail would take too long. He got the idea of frying them in a “cazo” . He had to make a utensil that would help poke the quail as it rooked to make sure the inside was cooking as well. The irs time he tried it, he felt that it needed more flavor, so he started marinating the quail for 24 hours. The entire family loved the fired quail more than the grilled quail. They said it was more flavorful. This became my grandpas favorite meal. In 2009, my grandfather was diagnosed with cancer and unfortunately passed away a few months later. In his honor, every year on his birthday we make quail and invite the entire family over.
