Gloria Ladson-Billings talks about Elizabeth Harris, a teacher who was a part of her study on culturally relevant practices. Winston has her students recite their goals and expectations at the beginning of the day, and celebrates their successes at the end of the day. According to Harris, children let too many people "convince them they are incapable of things" (Ladson-Billings, 2009, p. 52). Harris believes students deserve a challenge. This video clips is from the movie, Stand and Deliver. The man in the video, known as Jaime Escalante, believes students at a poor inner-city school are capable of succeeding while other teachers are doubtful of their success. Like Harris, Escalante believes in his students success and challenging them .

Gloria Ladson-Billings discusses the importance of creative teaching, and how important it is in engaging students in a lesson. This video clip shows a teacher playing guitar to English-Language learners. His goal is to teach English while having them sing along to a song. They are also following along to a printed page of the lyrics that has some blank spaces so the students can fill them in while they sing. His way of teaching with music is a culturally relevant practice because he is creative with his approach to teach English.

Gloria Ladson-Billings believes it's important to discover the knowledge that students bring with them to the classroom in order to create a curriculum that builds on their interests to encourage student engagement. In this video, Travis J. Bristol discusses an example of a classroom where students were always disengaged because they constantly discussed video games. He helped a teacher design a task where students designed a video game aligned with writing content objectives. As a result, that was the first time students saw themselves as writers because the task was meaningful to them.

Gloria Ladson-Billings discusses the importance of creating a classroom community where everyone works together as a team. In this video, students are given the opportunity during lunch time to perform simple maintenance activities around the school. This opportunity is for students who have become disconnected in the classroom, and it aims to help each student feel a sense of belonging in the school community. A teacher shown in the video discusses how important it is to develop positive relationships with students so that they feel a sense of belonging in the classroom.

Gloria Ladson-Billings discusses the importance of building connections with each student in the classroom. She gives an example of a culturally relevant teacher she has studied who happens to treat each of her students with kindness and respect. Larson-Billings notices how the students were having a positive school experience as a result of their teacher building positive connections with each of them.
In this TEDTalk, Rita Pierson is an example of a culturally relevant teacher who believes in the importance of building positive relationships with students, because she believes kids don't learn from people they don't like. She believes it's important to connect with students on a personal level and making each student feel cared. She believes never giving up on your students and believing they can always do their best will make huge difference in the lives of students.
