The proportional representation in the first branch would secure the large states against the small. An equality of voices was conformable to the federal principle and was necessary to secure the small states against the large. He said if a compromise did not take place the meeting would not be in vain but worse than in vain. He was not in general a half-way man, yet he yet he preferred doing half the good we could, rather than do nothing at all. The other half may be added when the necessity shall be more fully experienced. The power of self defense was essential to the small states.

the discussion was over representation concerning the size over small and large states. the committee was ready to agree to the compromise that was concerning the new jersey and virginia plans. the people who were discussing knew that a compromise was needed because if not it could lead to serious problems for the nation as a whole. due to the situation at hand and the terms regarding both plans the nation felt divided but under government was still united. it was thought that if no compromise was to take place the future of the nation was uncertain. the states (large and small) were still a part of the nation but if no decision was made then a divide would take place that we as a whole couldn’t come back from. the divide would be present and secession and foreign affairs could become a severe problem for the nation.

Proportional votes of states in both branches would be an issue for states with or without slaves. States with more slaves would have more votes and representation because those slaves count as more people, even though they count as 3/5ths of a person. States without slaves or with less slaves won't get as many votes and people representing them because they have less people. This can be an issue for states without slaves because they wont have as much say, representation, and power. It will make them feel small and they would most likely want equal representation. However, equal representation could be unfair for the slave populated states because they have more people and it is hard to get that many people to agree on one thing.

So a few days ago I was browsing the national archive and I came across this one document called the constitution? It seemed really neat so I looked a bit more into it and they had a whole convention to make this thing! That's crazy! Any who, I was browsing the dates and it happened on my birthday! June 29th! On this day, the framers (the people who put the constitution together :P) had lots of arguments over states governing themselves or having a federal government. One of the arguments were that smaller states should have the same representation as the larger states. Lots of the framers disagreed with this idea, though. They much preferred representation based on population However, the people didn't :O. Another argument the framers debated was states that are independent should have the right to have protection along with those who are under a government. Basically, each individual state should have their own army. The framers thought this was bogus! They didn't believe the states could do it. Another argument was that the framers believed that the federal government should have two branches, One with equal representation and one with representation based on population. The two branches are meant to govern the people. There were a lot of other arguments too, but these were the best! Haha I just love government.

Bye!!
- Group One

The Connecticut compromise was an agreement that large and small states reached during the constitutional convention of 1787. During the process to reach an agreement, many plans were introduced. The Gerry Committee Report was chosen over king from Massachusetts, Yates over Hamilton from new York, franklin over Wilson from Pennsylvania, etc.... They al believed the key to the compromise was winning over national supports like Gerry and mason. On july 7th they took up question of the equal vote for each state. in second branch and agreed (6-3-2) to retain this provision. On July 9th the committee suggested approval of the population formula. The second paragraph of the Gerry committee report was approved (9-2)

The Gerry committee was formed on July 2nd. The convention appointed its first committee, this was to help prepare standing rules and orders. The convention created the Gerry committee to settle representation issues between the large and small states. The Gerry committee didn't feel that the constitution would provide enough protection of people rights and state rights. The Gerry committee's first task was to settle the representation issue. The committee settled on this agreement; 1. the first branch of legislature will be elected by a population with states being apportioned one member for every 40,000 inhabitants. 2. All bills that raise and appropriate money will originate in the first house. 3. In the second branch of legislative each state will be equal.
