Drombeg Stone Circle in West Cork, Ireland

Introduction

The aim of this report is to provide information on one of the undiscovered tourist attractions of Ireland, explaining its importance to the both the indigenous ancient culture of the island and to the modern country, and suggesting ways to increase its exposure in the wider world.

Up close and personal with the Henge

Standing an impressive 26 foot in height, Drombeg Stone Circle in West Cork remains one the undiscovered gems of rural Ireland. The circle, located just outside the picturesque seaside town of Roscarbery, dates from pre-historic times, when the land was home to a sophisticated stone-age agricultural civilization. Although, it remains elusively unknown who exactly built this magnificent structure, certain deductions can be made regarding its use and purpose.

Ancient role and signifcance

Stone circles can be found all-round the Northern European isles. However, they dominate the landscape of the South-west of Ireland like no other. The significance of the circles such as Drombeg lie in its function as a pre-historic calendar, telling farmers when to plant their seeds and harvest their crops, providing much needed grain to the local economy. The henge would also have been able to tell these peoples rudimentary astronomical information such as when the solstices took place, as well as more complex phenomena like equinoxes, predictions on the passage and waxing and waning cycle of the moon through the sky and even the time of day, accurate to the minute. The circles also played an important role in the religious life of the ancient community living in the area. Although, as mentioned, tantalizingly little is known about its exact spiritual function.

Recommendations: Increasing its exposure

The circle remains relatively unknown outside of the local area. This, while disappointing, is understandable to a certain extent as the better-known Newgrange tends to capture the headlines. From a positive point of view, this provides huge potential for the expansion of the local tourist industry. This lack of exposure can be remedied by firstly using images of the henge in the new promotional literature of the agency. I suggest we commission a photographer to take some new shots of the site. We should also consider hiring a local historian to write a description of the place with the tourist in mind. Secondly, a new information plaque could be designed and erected in conjunction with the OPW (OFFICE OF PUBLIC WORKS). I would also suggest we lobby the government to make an application to the UN World Heritage site commission to have the site included on its global shortlist. The final recommendation would be to expand the access road, which now only accommodates one car at a time, in order to allow tourist coaches to approach the site.

ShangXiaJiu Pedestrian Street

Introduction

ShangXiaJiu pedestrain street, located in the old town of Xiguan, is one of the busiest commercial pedestrian streets in GuangZhou. The main purpose of this report is to provide some tourism information on it and to make some useful suggestions on its further enhancements.

Attraction of the Street

This 1218-meter long buzzing street is lined with more than 300 shops. Not only modern shopping malls but also various hawker stalls have set up in this street. This street also showcases a mix of local architecture, cuisine, and folk customs. Being both functional and aesthetically pleasing, its architecture features the characteristics of Southern European and Cantonese styles. Gourmet cuisine is the main attraction for tourists; the variety of food, a combination of traditional and modern food as well as Chinese and foreign food, can be easily found in different restaurants and food stalls.

Distraction of the Street
This buzzing and vivid street has attracted tourists around the world. The number of daily visitors, being either local residents or foreigners, outnumbers the population in one province. In such an over-crowded narrow street, filthiness and crawling traffic are very problematic.

Conclusion and Recommendations
In a nutshell, this street has made a significant economic contribution to the province. The cleanliness and smoothness of traffic are of paramount importance. Therefore, I would strongly suggest the local government promotes "green business" (run the businesses environmentally friendly) by reducing the corporation tax. I would also recommend the government builds more subways and to restrain any vehicles from pass through the street during the peak hours except for public transport.

The international organization where you work has a sum of money available for making improvements to the work environment in your office to make it more productive. You have been asked to write a report for your manager in which you:

- Outline the problem with your work environment

- Summarise the improvements you and your colleagues suggested

- Recommend two changes.

Report on workplace improvements

Introduction

It is a well-known fact that a good office environment is a crucial factor (that is required- you need this part) to achieve a high organizational performance. In examining the problems that affect our office environment, this report will outline the staff recommendations and suggest two action lines in order to improve the workplace and thus achieve a better work performance.

The workplace environment

The first observation to make concerns the condition of computers. Despite the fact that they were renewed four years ago, most of them are not functioning correctly due to ordinary wear and tear under normal use. Besides, the dining room walls are in bad state, with humidity stains, which gives an unpleasant impression. It must be also mentioned that one microwave oven is not enough to warm food during the lunchtime break and this problem results in unnecessary delays.

The staff viewpoint

Having been the stuff consulted, (? I don't get this- Having consulted the staff?) the main request was to replace the computer equipment. Moreover, an appeal was made to improve the conditions of the walls in the canteen. It was also noted the need to buy an extra microwave and a water cooler machine. (The need to buy an extra microwave and a water cooler machine was also noted) Some organizational issues were mentioned, such as a more flexible work schedule and a different system of incentives, but that (those) matters go beyond the objective of this report and should be addressed in a specific inquiry.

Recommendation(s)

In pursuance of a better work environment, two actions should be prioritized. First of all, I would hardly (no- use strongly here) recommend replacing all the computers of the office. This will enable us to improve work performance. Secondly, I am in favour of the idea of a complete dining room renovation. In this matter, I find it crucial to keep in mind one of the key principles of human resources management: “Should you give employees the benefits they value, they will be more satisfied and have a higher commitment to meeting the company’s goals”.

Read the exam question and write your letter. Use between 220-260 words. This will be published in a special supplement entitled A Fresh Start. Write a letter and tell us how you turned your life around and what made it happen.

Dear Editor,
Different people own different life-LIVES. Not everyone's life is smooth and full of happiness. Everyone has to make some crucial decisions at some stage of his/her life, these decisions sometimes can make-HAVE a knock-on effect on the future of his/her life, especially in the turning point of his/her life. Thus far, I have made plenty of crucial decisions and life choices in my life. The paramount decisions that I have ever made are the career choice and the career path I am pursuing.

Every child has his/her head in the clouds and dreams what (s)he would like to become when (s)he grows up. No exceptions, same as other children, I had plenty of infeasible and unrealistic dreams, like becoming a doctor, an engineer, an architect and so on. As I grew up, under my parents' influence, their life experiences told me that I no longer could live in these dreams, it was time for me to wake up from my unrealistic fantasies. When I finished my leaving cert, I was facing the most headachy-(doesn't exist nail-biting) problem that was what course I should study in university. A wrong decision could destroy the rest of my life, meanwhile, this decision also determined what kind of career path and life style I would pursue. My parents had cautiously warmed (sp) me that this was the turning point of my life and the decision should be approachable and realistic, being too ambitious will fail likely and easily (would likely end in failure).

Taking (Giving) my parents advice into (remove) serious consideration, I did a rough research on the job market. Based on the research, I speculated that I could study medicine, pharmacy, electronic engineering, and computer science. Although medicine was in my favor, I ultimately chose to study computer science due to the financial difficulties and the foreseeable future for the IT sector. I have never regretted about (remove) this decision. This decision has turned my life around, so far, I have completed all my education and became a professional lecturer. In addition, I will move up my career ladder, hopefully I will run my own researcher (research company) in the near future.

In all my life, not only do I not want to become a billionaire, but also I do not want to make ends meet.

Dear Paul,

I’m happy to hear from you, long time no talk. It’s great news that you’re going to spend the next summer here in Italy. It’s such a pity you are not going to stay in Como, but anyway I can come to Lucca for a few days to visit you. Even though we are going to meet just for a little time I’m pretty sure that your stay IS going to be fun.

Anyway, you SHOULDN'T be scared of the language. Here people are really easygoing and welcoming, and they love when foreigners make the effort to speak Italian. So, they’ll try to help you improve your speaking skills if you ask them for some tips. You just have to smile at people and behave like you were in your town in Ireland, you needn’t be shy.

If you really want to make new friends I strongly recommend you attend Italian lessons in a language school, since you’ll be put in touch with other people who share your goal of learning the language. Another way to meet new people is actually going to places where the young locals go. There you’ll certainly get the chance to have some chit-chatting- (NEGATIVE CONNOTATIONS) with guys of our same age. As I told you, Italian people tend to be very friendly if you approach them the right way.

Can’t wait to see you in Lucca!

Best wishes,

Gabriele

                                         Proposal for Go Game Society
Introduction
The general purpose of this proposal is to make a recommendation on forming a new Go game club for the third-level students.

Rules of the Game
Go is a fantastic board game of tactics and strategies for two players. It only needs a large board with grids and black/white stones. A game of Go starts with an empty board. Each player has an effectively unlimited supply of stone, one taking the black stones, the other taking white. The main object of the game is to use stones to form territories by surrounding vacant areas of the board. It is also possible to capture the opponent's stones by completely surrounding them.

Players take turns, placing one of their stones on a vacant point at each turn, with Black playing first. Stones are placed on the intersections of the lines rather than in the squares and once played stones are not moved. However they may be captured, in which case they are removed from the board, and kept by the capturing player as prisoner. At the end of the game, the players count one point for each vacant point inside their own territory, and one point for every stone they have captured. The player with the larger total of territory plus prisoners is the winner.

Demands on Go Game Club
This university has well-facilitated various societies, like rugby, tennis, photography and so on. Comments made at the end of the questionnaires suggest that it would be desirable to establish a club to promote this game.
Mainly this club can assist students to improve their problem solving skills and building up concentration. It would likely to create a marvelous social circle to integrate international students. Additionally, to set up this club, it would not be costly. The expenditure of setting up this club would only include the room rental.

Recommendation
I have no hesitation in making the following recommendations:

Set up a proper training course for amateur players

Run a general campaign to attract external investors for the enhancement of the club

Set up an annual national competition

Introduction

The aim of this proposal is to suggest the introduction of a statistics club among the students societies which are already existing in the campus.

An increasingly-popular topic

This university already has clubs for the most important and studied subjects, from humanities to mathematics as an example. In spite of this, unfortunately, it has not got a statistics society yet, and that is a pity since the world is becoming every day more data-driven statistical topics are attracting a lot of interest.

The club’s activities

Signing up to the club would be possible for every student of the campus and without any entry requirement, unless the passion for data and numbers. The society’s members would gather on Wednesday evening at 8.30 in the data science lab of U7 building so that the presence of computers can make the meeting more interactive. Sometimes, a lecturer could be hosted to bring the students some news and information about new trends in data analysis and statistical models and tools.

An annual conference

At the end of every academic year, the club members would give a presentation in the Main Lecture Room on the most significant and interesting case studies they have discussed during their meetups, so that all the university staff and students can be, at least partially, involved in the society activities.

Conclusion

Summarising, my recommendation is would be to allow the setting up of the Statistics club since, on the one hand, many students are really keen on that subject, and, on the other hand, because any discovery made during the meetings could boost the university's image.

Learn English with Working Experience

Introduction
This report is intended to appraise an English and internship programme. The main attraction of this programme will be elaborated. It will also consider likely future developments in this programme here.

Evaluation of Programme
In the last three-months of intensive study of English, our language skills have been greatly enhanced. So as to maximally expose what we learned in the classroom, we were assigned to work in various English-speaking environments according to our needs and interests. Nevertheless, we interacted with local residents every day. This is particularly beneficial for us to apply our language skills in daily life.

Main Attraction
In the light of the results of the survey conducted among participants, the majority of involvers -those involved/ participants/those surveyed have been in favor of the afternoon's working programme. It is due to the fact that it gives each learner a good opportunity to grasp the language and become a highly attractive candidate for future employers. This also assists each learner to build up confidence, responsibility, independence, and plenty of invaluable skills throughout the career path.

Recommendations
On balance, this is an intriguing and practical programme for learning a foreign language. Had we enough budget, it would be highly advisable for the director to organize some outdoor social programs, like a week-end jaunt, so that all learners can easily integrated into the culture and socialize with the locals. Perhaps the director might consider to set up a special social group in the social network, like Facebook, to promote this programme.

Proposal for the Introductory Weekend for Summer School

Introduction
The main objective of this proposal is to develop a cost-effective introductory programme for a language school.

Project Description
At present, different nationalities tend to congregate in their own individual groups. This is unbeneficial to learning foreign languages. We strongly believe that students should be exposed to a foreign language not just in the classroom but in a variety of environments and contexts. That is why our introductory programme would play an important role in the promotion of these summer courses. Besides of giving a presentation alive and a grand tour around the university and the town, the set-up of a responsive and eye-catching web site is also of great importance. Thereby, the web site should encompass all information on the courses and a good quality online videotape for a brief introduction of the university and the town so that students could have a great impression on the environment they would study and live. Moreover, the web site should also introduce the various, vibrant, and interesting social and cultural programmes the school would facilitate. With the growing popularity of social networks, it would be profitable to integrate the web site with a social network, like Facebook. To avoid congregating in the same nationality, students would be distributed into different social groups with multi-nationalities and each of which is led by a dedicated teacher.

Budget Analysis
The cost of this programme would be likely kept in the minimum. No external staffs would be hired for organizing activities. The student fees would cover the rental of coaches and admissions for some entries. The website would be maintained and designed by the researchers in the computer science department.

Conclusion
There would be the usual teething troubles at the beginning of every project, but that is to be expected. In spite of the effort required to overcome these troubles, this would be a worthwhile step to launch summer courses to students from aboard.

INTRODUCTION

The aim of this proposal is to evaluate the study and work programme that I have completed in an English-speaking country.

  CURRENT SITUATION

As the programme organiser must be aware, three-weeks is not much time for achieving all your goals and giving the best of you. Besides, having classes during the mornings and a job in the afternoons, requires a huge effort from you. In any case, the fact that the programme offers being constantly with English language, makes that your fluency improves noticeably.

  SUGGESTIONS

It is suggested a long-lasting programme, in order to immerse yourself in the English-speaking country.

On the other hand, having all day busy prevents you from sightseeing and knowing better the culture. So, it is recommended to make some trips with the class or with the company. In that way you can fill two needs with one deed, due to the fact that it will be easier and manageable the work environment, whereas at the same time you could provide tourism to your employees.

  CONCLUSION

If these recommendations are implemented, the current situation with the programme is bound to improve. It is already a profitable one, but I am sure that it could be better the next year.

Introduction

The aim of this report is to evaluate the three-week study and work programme that I have attended in Cork, Ireland, making suggestions for any improvement which needs to be made.

English lessons

During the mornings, I have attended English courses tailored for my level of language. The lessons were focused on every aspect that needed to be covered, from listening to vocabulary. Furthermore, teachers used a incredibly interactive method, in order to involve students as much as possible and to achieve a better learning. Last but not least, once a week every student had to give a presentation on a precise topic related to his/her country’s culture, as to significantly improve his/her speaking skills.

Working in a local firm

Besides, I spent every afternoon of my stay working for Crawford & Co, a Corkonian company specialized in providing quantitative consulting to financial firms. This experience has been extremely useful for my language, in particular since executing my tasks I have learnt a wide range of technical vocabulary. On top of that, I have also improved some soft skills as team working and time management, which could be useful for my CV.

Conclusion

In conclusion, even though both parts of the programme are worth being attended, I preferred working for a local company, since my tasks were totally interesting and it helped me to improve my English. However, I would strongly recommend the organisers to add some Busines English classes during the morning in order to provide basic knowledge to the students so that they do not find problems in understanding their tasks at work as I did.

Gabriele - Essay – Ways governments could help protect endangered species

Preserving endangered species is becoming an increasingly important challenge for actual governments, since climate change, pollution and invasive species are threatening the survival of our flora and fauna. Crucially, there is the extreme need to conserve biodiversity, and policy makers should tempestively implement protective measures.

One of those could be the establishment of protected zones, as to keep the wildlife safe in its habitat and far from the polluted environment. Under no circumstances should people be allowed to enter these areas, unless they are researchers or authorized visitors. This could certainly increase the population level of some of the endangered species, since they would be free to live their lives without any external threat. Furthermore, guided visits of the protected areas could be scheduled, in order to raise funds to improve them.

Another way of protecting the fauna could be raising awareness of the extinction risk that some species are facing by education. Schools and media should show people how sensitive wildlife is to the modern environmental issues and how they can help to preserve it. However, people on their own can not do a lot to defend endangered species, since more significative efforts need to be made, particularly in terms of economical resources.

On balance, if I had been a policy maker, I would definitely opt for the establishment of protected areas, because this brings immediate and significative benefits to the wildlife. Furthermore, long time could be needed by people to really understand the risk of extinction of some species.

As time goes by citizens do overwhelming researching and they seem to improve as humans, but then certain animal species are in danger because of the biped ones. Governments have a crucial role in the society and they could help to no more animals were in danger.

Firstly, only when the government, through its educational infrastructure, starts taking measures will people be aware of the endangered species. For instance, having a specific subject, in which children could learn features, examples about species that where in the earth years ago and why they are not anymore. Thanks to that, governments would be making people aware in early ages, so they would take care of the species and the animals as they have been taught in their school years. Moreover, schools and the media should show the public how they can help conserve wildlife.

Another approach would be create protected zones. Delimiting barriers would make easier to preserve a long life for these animals. Institutions like these could protect these species offering unspoilt nature, where only harbour these species and the needed food for surviving.

To conclude, invest money on education can be considered by the majority of people more effective, due to the fact that the earlier citizans realised about the importance of taking care of animals, the better. They will try not to hunt, contribute to make a better world for avoiding the climate change and the pollution. One person doing that is a drop in the ocean but if everyone does so it will make a difference.

After three years, the saplings are big enough to be thinned in the forest. They are ready to be cut after fourteen years of growing. The wood is sent to the factory. Firstly, they are cut into thin ‘slats’. After being treated, the thin ‘slats’ need sixty days to be ready for next step. Then put the glue and black leads into the made grooves. With new slat putting on the top ,we get a product like a sandwich. The product contuines being processed with hard-press and heat. As soon as these sandwich cut into pieces, they are ready for painting, sharping, and stamping.lastly, these pencial are pacaged.

The production of a pencil begins with the cultivation of wood. Cheap, quick growing wood works best such pine. First of all, seeds are sown and left to grow for 4 months. The saplings are uprooted and then replanted and left to grow for 3 years. The young trees are then thinned and left to grow for a further 14 years before being cut down. The wood is then cut into thin slats and treated by applying special chemicals. This helps the wood to last longer. After 60 days of treatment, grooves are cut into the slats and black lead is inserted into the grooves and stuck in place using glue. A second slat is then placed upon the first to form a sandwich. Afterwards, this is hard pressed and heat is applied to make the two halves of the sandwich stick together permanently. The sandwich is then cut into individual pencils and afterwards these are painted, sharpened and stamped. Finally, the finished product is inserted into a cardboard box container with other pencils for shipment to stationary shops.

During the dinner, Robert found that her father was no expression on his face, but her mother was very friendly. Robert was nervous and he found that Martha was even nervous than him. In order to defuse awkward, Robert was saying a Spanish sentence which means that Martha was nervous than me to Martha's parents. When her parents was listening his words, they was being irritated. Martha was explaining to her parents in Spanish and nobody was explaining to Robert. He realized that he said something wrong and his face got redder and redder. After the dinner, Martha told him that the meaning of that words were "pregnant" instead of "nervous". Robert never forgot the words.

I was at my early 20s and I was studying at a university in Mexico. By that time I had taken some basic Spanish classes, and I could speak some Spanish. Like many people who study abroad, I fell in love with a Mexican girl. It was near Christmas and I was invited to celebrate Christmas with her family. I had seen her family pictures and her dad always looks angry in the photos. I felt very nervous when I went to her house. Her mom was very friendly but the dad was exactly what I thought he’d be. We were having dinner and I thought I could say something in Spanish to ease the intense situation. So I said: “...”. I thought I said M(the girl’s name) was more nervous than me. But after I said it, everyone looked so embarrassed. The dad got even more angrier if he could possibly be; the mon was very shocked; the girl looked so uncomfortable and tight. I didn’t realize what I did wrong and everyone kinda let it go. After everything, the girl told me what I said wasn’t what I meant to say at all. The sentence I said means “M is pregnant”. I couldn’t believe I had made the mistake and I got so upset that night. But this incident taught me that when we learn a new language, it’s hard to avoid these kinds of embarrassing moments. But that’s when we also learn from it. When it happens, don’t feel too bad, learn from it then let it go.

Her girl friend invited him to have a dinner with her family on Christmas day. They communicated in Spanish when they were having dinner. Since Rob was a beginner of Spanish, when he wanted to say his girlfriend was nervous he made a mistake. What he said was her girlfriend was pregnant. So it turned into an embarrassed dinner. After dinner, Rob knew the mistake, and he felt so awkward. But since then Rob had learned how to deal with this kind of thing.

Global warming has many causes and one of them is deforestation.

Loss of vegetation causes the earth to warm up quicker as there is no barrier to take up some of the heat. This then leads to the soil getting dry, making it nearly impossible to grow back the trees that were lost in the first place. Other than that trees are of great importance to the earth's ecosystem as it converts the CO2 (which is again a big problem causing the average temperature to increase) into oxygen used by the animals in this ecosystem. Deforestation, in turn, can be caused by either human tree cutting, or, an actual forest fire, but whatever the cause the results are just as damaging.

Since the industrial age began, there has been a dramatic reduction in the amount of vegetation on the surface of the planet. One of the many causes of this is the gargantuan demand for animal protein that exists in the global market today. This demand has tempted many countries to create pasture from land formerly given over to forest life. The attractiveness of this global market is more acutely felt in developing economies, especially those in the tropics. The effects of the deforestation are legion. First of all, species are under threat of extinction due to their habitats disappearing, the white tiger of Russia is a case in point.

Deforestation is problematic as it will cause mudslides, flooding and suffering to biodiversity. Whenever a loss of vegetation occurs, due to, for example, an increase in the demands for meat or wood, the soil will be harmed. This deforestation, gives rise to water not being able to sink into the ground which will result in flooding and mudslides. Another major effect of trees being cut down is the reduction of photosynthesis, which causes less CO2 to be absorbed, and, transformed into oxygen. All together deforestation is a huge cause of climate change.

First if all, obviously, it destroys enormous ecosystems such as the Amazonian forest which is home to thousands and thousands of animal species. Consequently, some of those species are becoming endangered or even becoming extinct due to the destruction of their natural habitat. Secondly, toxic chemicals released by all the machines and other tools used to cut down the trees are as bad for the environment as they are for human beings since it can cause respiratory or pulmonary illnesses as we been seeing in countries such as China. If you have visited a large city in China recently, you will have noticed that a huge proportion of the population wear masks when outside, in order to mitigate the effects of air pollution.
