         <title>Deep water horizon </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Location: Gulf of Mexico <br>Date: April 20, 2010 <br>What happened?: the drill rig exploded and sank causing all the oil to spill <br>Point source <br>Effects: many people die due to the explosion and the fire and the oil that spilled killed slot nor marine life and destroyed many habitats. The fire wasn't put out right away due to the oil keeping the flames going so many fishs died. <br>Clean-up: many gallons of chemical dispersants were released into the ocean. <br>Long term effects: many habitats are still destroyed to this day and the oil will never fully go away. It will continue to pollute our ocean water. <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Location: prince William tanker <br>Date: march 24, 1989 <br>What happened?:the captain of the rig was drunk and the tanker hit an ice berg causing 10.8 million gallons to spill out. <br>Point source <br>Effects: the oil killed alot  of marine life and damaged many habitats. Salmon, sea otters, seals, and seabirds were greatly affected. Many of them died. <br>Clean-up: burning, mechanical cleanup, and chemical dispersant. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Camp lejeune contamination</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Location: marine corps base camp lejeune <br>Date: 1953-1987<br>What happened?: from the time of 1953-1985, marine families had been drinking and bathing in contaminated water. The water was contaminated with toxins at a concentration of 240 to 3400 times more than what is permitted. <br>Point source <br>Effects: the water that was contaminated didnt effect many of the people at the time but their children were affected. Many were born with a high probability of cancer and many of them died at young ages. <br>Clean-up: the well was shut down but by that time the damage was already done. They tried to help those that were effected or had children that were effected. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Gold king mine spill </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Location: silverton, Colorado&nbsp;<br>Date: August 5, 2015&nbsp;<br>What happened?: about 3 million gallons of acidic mine water spilled into cement creek and the flow of the water spread the minerals all the way down the river.<br>Point source&nbsp;<br>Effects: the water of the stream was contaminated with nasty yellow wastewater and that damaged habitats and the water is no longer safe to drink.&nbsp;<br>Long-term effect: we dont know when the waste water will be drained from the river but the river travels to many areas and contaminates it too.&nbsp;<br>Clean-up: a clean up crew was sent to tr5y and fix the damage and to check for over leaking mines. They are also trying to clear out the birds that lie their to safer habitats. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Love canal contamination </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Location: Niagara Falls, New York <br>Date: 1942-1953<br>What happened?: a landfill was contaminated by Hooker Chemical by tons of toxic waste. They then covered up th landfill with layers of dirt. Homes and schools began to be built on top and many felt the effects. Many people get sick and smelled odors. Scientists determined that the chemicals seeped into the basements of homes and the fumes made the residents sick. <br>Point source <br>Effects: many people became ill and had to leaves their homes. <br>Clean-up: the environmental protection agency had to go in and clean out the tons of waste that was polluting the area. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Pacific gas and electric chromium contamination </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Location: hinckley, CA <br>Date: early 1950<br>What happened?: about 370 million gallons of chromium-tainted waste wateeer was dumped into unlined wastewater ponds and the waste spread to the water that was supplying the residents of hinckley. <br>Point source <br>Effects: the residents of the town began to get sick of either cancer or other illnesses. If not the residents then most of their future children would be effected. Many of the children got cancer or other illnesses not to long into their lives. Mnay of them died young. <br>Clean-up: the water that supplied the residents was shut off and a law suit helped those effected by the toxic water. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Location: northwest ohio<br>Date: June 22, 1969 <br>What happened?: a fire started in the rive due to alot  of oily debris and extreme amounts of pollution. The fire reached emourmous heights and lastest  around 30 minutes. However, this was not the only fire that occurred there, there had been many fires prior to this one this was  just the biggest. <br>Point source <br>Effects: the fire polluted the air and the fog of smoke was very bad. It made it hard for people to breathe. <br>Clean-up: the fire had to be put out and the cst of repairs was arLund $50,000</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Location: Woburn, Massachusetts <br>Date: September 1984<br>what happened?: two wells were contaminated with toxins from a near by plant and the residents of the town that drank it contracted leukemia. The adult and the children were effected. Seven adults and five children died of leukemia. <br>Point source <br>Clean-up: the wells that were contaminated were shut down and a law suit was filed to try and help the families effected. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Elk river chemical spill </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Location: kanawha river, charleston, virginia <br>Date: January 9, 2014<br>What happened?: 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol from Freedom Industries facility was released into the river and the river was then unsafe to drink and the many residents in thr ton couldn't use the water. Fortunately, they were aware of the problem before anyone could be greatly effected. <br>Point source <br>Effetcts: the water couldn't be used and the residents were without water. A law suit was filed toward the company and the plan of the company had to be altered.  Many of the residents were affected and some hospitalized but their were no fatalites. <br>Clean-up: the water was deemed undrinkable to make sure the residents weren't greatly effected and a law suit was filed. And the toxins had to be removed from the water. </div>]]></description>

The disease effected about 25% of the population. <br>Point source <br>Clean-up: the water had to be cleaned of the parasite and the people effected had to be treated. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Gulf of Mexico dead zone </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Location: Gulf of Mexico <br>Date: 1985<br>What happened?: an area in the Gulf of Mexico is the biggest dead zone. Marine life can not last there because there is low oxygen in he area. The dead zone is around 8,185 sq. miles. The water is suspected to be unsafe to marine animals due to the runoff that goes into the ocean.<br>Non-point source <br>Effects: the water cannot support marine life. The water does not have enough oxygen so the fish sufficate. <br>Clean-up: their is not much that can be done for the water but scientists are trying to treat it so the fish can return.  <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Hudson River PCB contamination </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Location: Hudson River <br>Date: 1940-1970 <br>What happened?: the river has a high level of PCBs that are unsafe for people to come in contact with. The PCB came from the General electrics manufacturing facilities. <br>Point source <br>Effects: the Hudson has unsafe amounts of PCBs and is unsafe to use. <br>Clean-up: the PCBs are being cleaned out of the water. The fish in the water are also unsafe to eat due to the toxins that they injest. Many scientists and environmentalist have stepped in to try and solve the problem. <br><br></div>]]></description>
