I think it takes passion and curiosity to have a great idea! It begins with curiosity, the who, what, when, where, why, and how the idea comes to be. Passion is the thing that drives you to stay aware and true to the idea. Curiosity and Passion work well together to make a great idea.

Things I find to be true:
1. Self-advocacy is crucial to succeeding in a class!
- Ask question when unsure
- Make your feelings and thoughts clear
2. Interest/Passion in what you write!
- Find topics that make you excited to write about it!
3. Time Management
- Use time wisely
- Do not PROCRASTINATE!
4. Use resources available to you!
5.
Self-Identity

Walking through those doors, time slowed down in my mind, I was dramatically walking by with my headphones in like the protagonist during the opening scene of a self-identity movie, carrying a backpack that could be used in a weight lifting class, and the daunting thought of walking into the wrong class or tripping in the crowded cafeteria. During my first year, I quickly noticed that my classes seemed to be full of all kinds of students. The typical stereotypes walked in the jock/popular kid, the nerd, the theater/band geek, the emo/goth, and the loner too. A building filled with kids who are so different but similar at the same time.

As the years went by I noticed all these students including myself were wrestling with self-identity. I crept those halls for four years and took a psychology class to realize that we were all figuring out who we were. We all made friends that made us look forward to going to class, we lost some due to terrible experiences, we cried when we felt hopeless and laughed so hard we got kicked out of class. I learned to love myself, where I came from, and what I believe in. I found that I was passionate about psychology and how it affects all of us. It was a spiritual awakening.
God said, "Lluvia you are meant to help others."

In the beginning, I questioned how those four years of my life would be like. I wondered if they would be the best years of my life or the worst. High school is the stage in our life where we question everything. Where we become our favorite version of ourselves or our least favorite. The place we discover who we are and what we like. I was content with the idea of who I wanted to be, I want to help others become the best version of themselves. Will we ever be satisfied with ourselves? Or will we want to become the best version?

July 5th, 2019 I wake up in a bed that is not mine. On a cruise ship 2,591.3 miles away from home. I leap out of bed and race to the shower to get ready for an adventure. All my life I’ve dreamt of traveling to Alaska “The Last Frontier”. As I’m having my routine shower concert I am startled by a bell in the hall, morning announcements in the ship gave me flashbacks to elementary school.
“Good Morning folks, We will be docking in Skagway, Alaska in the next few minutes.” Explained the Morning Captain.
“Because I’m happy ” I sang along to Pharrell’s song “Happy”

Skipping toward the elevator I thought to myself, “Wow, Alaska has the perfect weather during summer, it isn't super hot and not chilly enough for a jacket.” I arrived at deck 9 also known as the lido deck for breakfast looking anxiously for the perfect plate of food. I walked by the breakfast bar and man did those pancakes look so fluffy, almost like a freshly fluffed pillow. I really appreciated the crew ship members that day for preparing such mouth-watering food.

After breakfast, my parents and I headed down to exit the ship. The fresh breeze of the ocean softly kissed my checks and instantly filled my heart with joy. Perambulating through Skagway I admired its beauty. The deep blue ocean filled with white tremendous glaciers and the tall staggering mountains crowded with green pines left me dumbfounded. It was at that moment I realized what made me grateful to be alive. As we hopped from gift shop to gift shop, I wondered to myself what makes people feel alive? Does traveling bring this much joy to others as it does to me?

I grew up in church, there are so many things that have impacted my life in the best way but one of the most important to me is a place. Glacier View Ranch, an alpine Christian retreat/conference center has been a big part of my life forever. Our church would gather every year on the same weekend and at the same place as other Hispanic churches around Colorado. It became a tradition, where we would gather to enjoy nature and most importantly worship God together. As the years went by this location became so important to me.

Friday afternoon we gather up all of our things, getting ready to head out for an amazing weekend. Mom has prepared breakfast, lunch, and dinner for us to enjoy this weekend. Dad has loaded up the truck with all of our camping essentials especially our warm fuzzy blankets. Our family usually rents out a cabin next to the lake for the weekend. It is the perfect location, has the most amazing view of the lake, and has a good walking distance from the church. Thankfully we live 48.3 miles away from Glacier View Ranch, it takes us 1 hour and 14 minutes to get there. As we drive I admire the beauty that surrounds us. I reach over to put the window down and I listen closely to the river rush by, the sound calms me.

We arrive at the check-in booth around 7 p.m. My dad parks the truck next to this immense wooden cabin.

He tells me, “Mija, baja conmigo para conseguir la llave de la cabaña”

“Si, claro Dad” I respond excitingly.

Once we have the key we drive a few minutes up to our cabin. I slowly open the truck door and step out, the first thing I feel is the autumn breeze swift through my hair, then I’m drawn to the stars and the moon that is so effortlessly painted on the lake, and lastly, my nose seems to be overtaken by the smell of burning wood making me want to be sitting around the campfire and singing, and eating smores. At that moment I thought to myself. “Man does this place bring me so much peace and joy.” ever since I wondered, Do others have a happy place?

I then told them about a TedTalk that I watched that was all about "making stress your friend". I showed them a clip of the talk before explaining what it was about. I then talked to them about how the speaker really draws us in with evidence and certain things that can be very relatable. It was kind of a difficult conversation because we would go off topic and talk about something else. I used google docs to copy and paste the transcript, I then highlighted power verbs and added comments to each phrase on the margin!

In the Ted Talk "How to make stress your friend" Kelly McGonigal shares about how her view on stress and how it has changed over time. She takes time to change the audience's perspective on stress and gives useful tips to help cope with stress. Everyone deals with stress; over time it has become a negative thing. Kelly is a health psychologist with a mission to help people be happier and healthier.

As she begins, McGonigal uses studies to show how stress has become harmful to public health. She uses statistics to explain how people who had a higher risk of dying were also those who believed that stress is bad. Those who didn’t view stress as harmful had a lower risk of dying. Positively looking at stressful situations can save a person’s life! McGonigal introduces a hormone that humans have called Oxytocin also known as the cuddle hormone that makes people want physical contact with others. She explains that people’s biological stress response is the things driving them to tell others how they feel. This stress response helps people become aware of their surroundings and wants them to be surrounded by loved ones. Kelly McGonigal clarifies that stress gives people access to their hearts. This different view has allowed people to trust themselves during stressful situations and has reminded them that they don't have to do it alone.

First, I tried the Week 5 Virtual Classroom, where I got the chance to get feedback from other students. I got feedback that helped me improve on certain parts that I needed in help on. For example, a peer helped me fix parts where there had to be clarification on the speaker's point of view or paraphrasing quotes. Next, I had the chance to purchase Grammarly Premium to help me catch mistakes in my punctuation throughout the summary. Finally, I looked into using the CTRL+F shortcut on my laptop to help me find any first-person language and change it to the correct format, which is third-person language. Ultimately I learned how to correctly summarize a ted talk and use resources to help improve my writing.

My family and I usually travel on the Carnival Cruise Line. How much does Carnival Cruise make? Carnival cruise made $18.9 billion in total revenue in 2018. Why is this business so successful? Vacationing is meant to be a relaxing time. Many people plan their vacation on Crusie Ships because it has everything you need, fantastic food, a place to sleep, and entertainment all in one place. Where do most of the passengers come from? The U.S. is the number one country that loves cruising with 11.5 million passengers.

https://www.streetdirectory.com/travel_guide/215769/cruises/top_five_reasons_why_cruise_vacations_are_so_popular.html

https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/top-10-countries-that-love-cruising.htmlb

In Carr's writing I noticed around 17-18 sources. Three sources that stuck out to me we. First, he referred to how Marshall McLuhan a media theorist pointed out that media wasn't just a channel for info but also for other things! Second, he talked about Bruce Friedman and how using the internet has "altered" his mental habits. Lastly, Friedrich Nietzsches and how his writing changed overtime while using a typewriter. I think Carr used so many sources because he wanted to get the bigger picture. He wanted every point of view there was to come to a conclusion. I learned that I should look at all kinds of sources to get out every possible view to analyze and satisfy every possible outcome.

My first source is an article from The New York Times. Sheila Kaplan in the article "White House Blocked C.D.C Order to Keep Cruise Ships Docked" talks about the harsh effects that the Coronavirus pandemic has had on the Cruise industry. First, Kaplan explains the actions that the White House has taken to prevent any more spreading of the virus. A C.D.C order was placed to keep ships docked and out of business. Second, she talks about the confrontations that certain doctors have had with President Trump. Finally, she explains that these doctors are working towards preventing the spread of the disease while struggling with rumors from The White House. This pandemic has put a pause on this very popular tourism industry.
After reading this source, I wonder how the industry has worked to prevent the spreading and looking for options to open back up. "Dr. Stephen Ostroff, a former acting commissioner of the F.D.A., who serves on the Healthy Sail group, said the panel has recommended that cruise passengers are tested before arriving at the ship and then again before boarding." (Kaplan 2020) I wonder if these options can actually help or make the problem worse. This industry without passengers will not succeed. During this pandemic, I truly wonder if people will take a chance and travel on cruises again. Many people are afraid of taking that risk.
This new research has helped me find more information on how badly the Cruise Ship Industry has been affected by the COVID-19 crisis.

Kaplan. Passengers how COVID-19 impacted them" First, this source shows some passenger's experiences on cruise ships. These passengers tested positive for COVID-19, they take time to explain how they felt about the whole situation. Also, they talked about how the industry could have done more to protect them or prevent it.
After watching this video, I wonder how many passengers who were affected by this feel towards cruise travel? I wonder how many lawsuits the industry got after this incident? Are they going to begin sailing again? What are they doing to prevent the spread of the disease?
This source has given me so much information about passengers that have made this whole thing much more real.
Stop 5: Coronavirus Update: Cruise Ships Are Sitting Empty At U.S. Ports

Summary:
This newscast is created by NPR News it is titled "Coronavirus Update: Cruise Ships Are Sitting Empty At U.S. Ports", which is hosted by Alisa Chang accompanied by NPR's Miami correspondent Greg Allen and NPR health policy reporter Selena Simmons-Duffin. First, they discuss the issues that are occurring between science and politics. They shed light on Rick Bright's situation (federal scientist focused on vaccine development who has filed a whistleblower complaint with the Office of Special Counsel) was demoted for not wanting to promote a drug to treat COVID-19. Second, they talk about how the pandemic has left the cruise industry in a difficult situation. Carnival one of the largest cruise industry is waiting for approval from the CDC to begin sailing again. Also, they talk about issues that Carnival has faced by receiving federal help which leads to criticism. Finally, they discuss how Carnival is under investigation by Congress for knowing about COVID-19 and letting passengers on anyways.

Response:
Listening to this newscast really got me thinking about everything going on. This pandemic has made life stressful for me, but just imagine these industries that make billions of dollars a year and not making anything now due to the situation. Politics and science seem to be in conflict which is scary because if our leaders don't believe in the works and process of science how will we get better? Rick Bright a scientist who has been working on vaccine development talks about how politics have made his job impossible. "Time after time, I was pressured to ignore or dismiss expert and scientific recommendations and, instead, to award lucrative contracts based on political connections." (Coronavirus Update 00:00:19-28) Dr. Beight's actions caused him to be demoted from his position as director of BARDA (Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority). If our leaders ignore scientific recommendations that can help what's our future going to be like?

My Thinking:
This source has really updated my thinking. As I began to research I found many sources that discussed the issues that the Cruise Industry faced during the pandemic. This industry truly is struggling to get back in business. Like I've said before my family and I love vacationing on cruises. Listening to this newscast has got me worried because one of the biggest cruise lines Carnival is so rushed to keep sales up that at the beginning of the pandemic they knew about it yet ignored it. During the newscast, Greg Allen talks about how Carnival is being investigated by Congress, "This is about what Carnival knew about the coronavirus when it allowed passengers to get on its ships. The House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure wants to know why Carnival didn't act sooner to protect the health of passengers and staff." An industry that solely functions on having passengers should really care about the safety and health of their passengers.

Questions:

Does this industry care for the safety and health of their passengers?

Is it all about money?

Will our leaders continue to ignore scientific recommendations?

Works Cited:
“Coronavirus Update: Cruise Ships Are Sitting Empty At U.S. Ports.” All Things Considered, May 2020. EBSCOhost, search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=edsglr&AN=edsgcl.623515594&site=eds-live.

Stop 6: What It's Like To Quarantined On A Cruise Ship For Coronavirus

Summary:
This second source is also a newscast created by NPR News it is titled "What it's like to be quarantined on a cruise ship for coronavirus", hosted by Rebecca Davis. Rebecca takes time to talk to passengers on the Diamond Princess about their experience of being quarantined in a cruise ship. First, she speaks to a couple who enjoyed their trip at first but as the quarantine began their feelings shifted. The ship was not the same anymore, complete silence surrounded the ship with no more enjoyment. Next, she talks to other passengers who talk about how they'd prefer to be quarantined at home and not on a ship. Lastly, she talks to a couple who is interrupted by the ship captain asking his passengers to check their temperature and if it is higher than 37.5 degrees Celcius to call a certain number.

Response:
After listening to this source, I can't help but imagine how this experience affected every single passenger on this ship. A passenger on this ship explains how she felt when the captain announced that a passenger had coronavirus. "The whole room became silent - the whole dining room - because everybody was kind of shocked at the news...We were in shock. I started crying." Think about the fear and anxiety that this must have caused. Families with children, older people, and people with harsh health conditions were easy targets.

My Thinking:
My thinking is being updated with every source I get. Passengers sharing their experience with us is very impactful because while we were here in our home safe and sound they were on a ship not so safe and not in the comfort of their homes.

Questions:

Will the passengers want to go back?

What will the industry do to prepare for future pandemics?

Summary: The source that I found to cross-pollinate my idea with was this documentary I found on Netflix. "Down to Earth with Zac Efron", by Netflix. The documentary is about Zac Efron and his travels around the world, it talks about the themes of travel, life, nature, green energy, and sustainable living practices. It inspires the viewers to travel and to experience the different ways of life that other live.

Response:
After watching this documentary, I learned so much and felt so inspired to go out into the world and experience everything out there rather than what's here in my community. At the end of the documentary Zac says "The more we learn and the more stuff we see, the more questions are asked. And I feel like there's endless doorways that have shown themselves to us. it seems like the more we, kind of, excavate, the more comes out to play." Zac took this journey to bring attention to serious topics that are going on around us; topics like poverty, natural disasters, ways we can begin using reusable energy, and global warming. He finds himself asking so many questions, he's always curious to what is coming next and how every single person and place he's met has changed his view of life. This has definitely been one of my favorite documentary I have ever seen, other having the biggest crush on Zac Efron I really did learn a lot about what's going on around the world and what they are doing to help our environment or simply their awesome way of life.

Connection:
People travel for so many reasons. Personally I travel because I enjoy meeting new places, new people, there cultures and way of life really make me appreciate everything around me.

Questions:
What drives people to travel?
Why do some people not believe in global warming?
What can we do to help our environment?

At the beginning of my journey, I asked myself what made people feel alive, and if others enjoy traveling as much as I do. My family and I enjoy traveling on cruises. Due to the current pandemic, life has not been the same. The traveling industry has taken a hard hit and is struggling to recover.

Two types of sources I first used was a news article on how COVID-19 has affected the cruise ship industry. The second source was a news cover on how the way life on the ship was for the passengers and how it affected the way they felt about the industry. This shifted my thinking by making me curious about how the industry can improve when it comes to difficult situations like this and make a life for passengers better. But also we are all human and tragic things happen that caused panic and fear. So maybe the people in charge of the ships were in panic mode and scared of interfering with reality.

I feel like I have found the answers to my questions.

I want to get others to think or to feel alive when traveling, to experience other cultures, and the importance that revolves all around our world because we live on this earth for a short period of time and we should take care of it and conserve it because it's our home.

In college, I learned that research is a really long process and you have to be precise and attentive to every detail. This will help get you all the answers you need and more. Using resources like librarians, professors, and classmates are super beneficial. Always ask specific questions. Search any and every option for all possible outcomes.

For my project, I am thinking of using iMovie as my media platform. I have a MacBook so I think it will be easier to work with and also I have worked with iMovie before so I have experience making videos. My plan is to make my project look like a News channel using "Breaking News" and intense sounds and images to draw my audience's attention.
There are three ways I will structure my idea; First, I will use images of traveling during covid. Second, share my parent's personal story of traveling during this time. And third, news stories of passengers on Cruise ships. I'd like to use images of beautiful touristic places we all know that is all alone now.
My idea should be accepted to the symposium for the following three reasons. First, traveling is essential to life. Second, wanderlust gives us knowledge and experience. And finally, we need to acknowledge the negative effect that covid has caused in our life.
Here's the real deal, COVID has stripped us from our wanderlust.
