English As A Second Language

20% of students at Firebaugh High School are English language learners. This is a social factor that could either be viewed as an asset or a deficit. From my observation at FHS, the school as a whole views students who are bilingual as assets. It is possible that some teachers may still view students as road bumps in the classroom, which is unfortunate. Failure to accept these students can be heartbreaking to students, as well as distracting to their education.

Many students go home to an empty house. Many students have parents who only speak and understand Spanish, so it is hard for them to help students with homework. These factors can make students feel like school is a waste of time. They feel like they will never achieve good grades because of lack of support.

83% of students at FHS qualify for free and reduced priced lunches. Many students come directly into the school as immigrants, or have parents grandparents who were immigrants. Many students' parents still work in field labor or factory labor, which consists of long seasonal shifts. Parents have this work-hard mentality in order to provide funds for their children to be in sports and extracurricular activities, in hopes that their child receives scholarships as a means to attend college. Or, parents are working to simply earn money to pay for students' tuition. Students seem to either take this situation as a hardship, or as fuel to push themselves harder. It really depends on the parents and students specific attitudes.

Athletic Expectations

I am not sure what the reasoning is, however Fireabugh High School has a heavy focus on athletics. Students who are athletes often seem to receive special attention, benefits, etc. from teachers, administration and other students. This can make students who are not interested in sports feel very unimportant, and rightly so. I do believe this is a fault that FHS has. I believe there needs to be a greater push to be sure teachers and administration are treating all students equal. Some students participate in sports due to pressure from parents, peers, and teachers. I do not think students need any added pressure in their lives, and should be given more opportunities to shine in other activities they may have talent in.

In my opinion all students face mental health issues. I believe it is something all teachers and administration should be aware of at all times. Students will break down and say it is nothing. We must be prepared as adults to be supportive and helpful, and to be able to provide resources for students' needs. I feel that some teachers and administrators at FHS deal with this issue the best they can, however some do not. I understand that it may be uncomfortable to talk about these issues, but it is necessary. Our goal as teachers should be to make the learning environment safe and welcoming.

Firebaugh High has begun to take health seriously within the past few years. There has been a stronger push in P.E. classes for students to participate. They have also added a home economics class, in which the students are learning how to make real food instead of eating ramen when they get home from school. The school has also begun offering fresh fruits in the cafeteria, which the students seem to enjoy. Physical health and obesity is still an issue, but it is something they are working on!

Where's the Art?

Because there is a lot of emphasis on participating in sports and the FFA program at Firebaugh High, there is very little room left for the Arts. Music and Drama have grown in the past few years, however Visual Arts are still lacking. There could be a lot of talented students that we are not aware of, and never will be aware of, because we are not allowing them to grow. Students will struggle in all of their classes if they do not feel like they are excelling in any subject. They could also be using visual arts as a means of coping with mental health.
