Lisa's War, by Carol Matas, is a historical fiction about World War II from the perspective of Lisa, a 12-year-old Jewish girl, living in Denmark. She continues with her day, and everything seems to be ordinary--everyone was going about their day. However, that thought left her mind quickly when she saw the German soldiers patrolling the streets, planes dropping newspapers--written in horrible Dane, and strange rumors, that she's not quite sure whether they're true or not . . .

The main idea/message in this chapter is about the uncertainties and frustration brought by war. A specific example from the story is when Stefan, Lisa's older brother, is frustrated at the lack of effort by the military to protect Denmark. Another instance is when their parents want Stefan to walk with Lisa, just in case. However, there isn't a lot Stefan can do when faced with danger, such as facing an armed soldier, which proves the uncertainty and hesitations that their parents have.

This chapter reminds us of the pure chaos brought with war.

A cool reference, in my opinion, is when Stefan refers to ‘Exodus’. Exodus is a book/chapter–or a period of time within the Jeudo-Christian bible–also known as the old testament. Exodus is a period of time when the israelis–who were jewish–were enslaved by the Egyptians, then led out by Moses into the promised land. When Stefan says, “Only this time, when we have to leave Denmark, it won’t be like the Exodus. There won't be anything to celebrate.”, is probably referring to the fact that there is no “hero” to save them, or a place that will welcome them.

This chapter focuses on Stefan and Jesper helping the resistance and Lisa also wanting to join the resistance. This demonstrates how much children are capable of, and often overlooked, and this is exactly why it makes them so powerful. Without solid evidence, no one–no Nazi soldiers are going to suspect that children are helping spread the leaflets–that they are helping the resistance.

This chapter shows the result of Lisa’s initiative to take part in the resistance, and she finally gets accepted by her brother. She can finally help out! I think her brother let Lisa be part of the resistance because he respected how much she wanted to help out. I believe initiative is something that everyone should try to have. One of my favorite quotes says, “Without initiative, leaders are simply workers in leadership positions.” - Robert Foster Bennett.

I think Lisa will try to do more to help the resistance–I think she will be dissatisfied by just giving out leaflets, but will want to do something more extreme. I think this because based on my reading experiences, usually characters like to push themselves, and usually find themselves in a tight situation. This is most likely a strategy for the authors to keep the readers hooked, while not showing all of their trump cards (interesting plots). Another reason is simply because Lisa seems to be a character that really wants to do something and take action about her current situation.

It’s Friday–the day of Lisa’s first mission. She walks into the laundry shop, and asks the old man for Soren Sorensen’s laundry. “At least they have a sense of humor”, she thought, after receiving a laundry bag marked ‘S.S’. Her mission was quite simple, she had to drop the leaflets inside different streetcars until the bag was empty. Oh, what a “lucky” day! Her stomach aches and she ends up throwing up at the German soldiers. Lisa ran out of the streetcar in a hurry, as they had spotted the leaflets in her bag, but fortunate for her, a crowd blocked the soldiers and gave Lisa time to escape.

The old man in this chapter expresses humor, and I think sometimes these little things could improve someone’s day. When you have the choice to be optimistic, or pessimistic, why not choose to be optimistic? When you have the choice to be hopeful, or discouraging, why not choose hopeful? Because small things like this, can impact greatly to those around you.

This chapter talks about how dehuman the Nazis could be. Killing the parents of a young baby, exploding the dance hall just because they played some American song. The idea of Nazism is about how dehuman the Jewish people are (which, they are not). However what the Nazis are doing is cruelty beyond forgiveness and violence beyond healing. It is true that lots of the Nazis have been brain washed since a young age–joining Adolf Hitler’s “boy scout”, but this just proves how unhuman Hitler was, and thus it can be said the same for the Nazis, since the Nazis are the result of his ideas.

Two main idea/messages for this chapter; 1. Though not mentioned in my summary, this chapter talks about the poor economic state of Denmark, 2. Adding on to the main idea/message of the previous chapter, finding happiness or joy in hard times. Starting off with idea number one, the Nazis, inspite taking powers from the government, does not sustain the economy of Denmark, nor do they provide goods for the civilians of Denmark. Evidence can be found in the chapter, when it is revealed that Lisa’s new dress is made of parachute, and that she is wearing an actual glove, other than the green ones made of fish skin. Idea number two is expressed when Lisa states that it was the most wonderful birthday of her life. I think this is trying to tell us that, despite everything, the smallest of light can be found in the darkness.

At the beginning of this pandemic, the rules were very strict, which restricted us from doing in-person school for quite some time, however now, everyone seems to get back to “normal”, and start hanging out with families and friends more (Which is my second main idea/message from this chapter–finding happiness or joy in hard times).

I predict that Susanne will join the resistance, in order to avenge her parents. I think that because Lisa and Stefan are already in the resistance, and like Lisa, it is only natural that Susanne will find out, sooner or later, and will want to join. Another reason is that, she will most likely develop a stong hatred towards the Nazis, as they are the reason that her parents are dead. Susanne helping out the resistance would definitely be helpful, as they could give out more leaflets in larger scales, and areas more efficiently.

This chapter is very short, thus there aren't many connections that I can think of, however the part where Sarah is adopted into the family, it reminds me of how much Ukrainian refugees have taken refugees all over the world. According to BBC news, more than 14 million people are thought to have fled their homes after Russia’s invasion. I find that it is foolish of Russia to invade Ukraine, wasting all of their resources and relationships with other countries, for just more land. Of course, lands as big as Ukraine are worth lots, but no countries will buy them. Even if Russia manages to take over Ukraine, countries will still most likely keep sanctions on Russia, until some treaty is signed, which would probably cause Ukraine to regain their lands or at least most of it.

They stop at a factory, and when Stefan and two other men get out of their car, Susanne confronts them, saying that she wants to help too. They soon agree and Susanne and Lisa are given the task of pouring the kerosene from the door to the explosive. After they are done, they quickly take off in a car, leaving the factory to explode along with the German guards. “My God, I think these Germans are dragging us all down to their level”, Lisa thought.

The main idea/message of this chapter could be the difficulty of getting over the deaths of those you loved and the damage it does to your mentaly. This is evident in this chapter, when Susanne won't talk, cry, nor smile. However, it seems that she starts to feel a little better after avenging her parents after blowing up the factory, and the German soldiers with it. There are mixed opinions on whether “revenge” is really an okay thing to do. In my opinion, I don’t think it is morally right to do so, however the Nazis don’t deserve to be left unpunished either, after all they have done. I find that there are many reasons that support, and reject this idea of “an eye for an eye” situation, but personally, I conclude that it is something that is okay to do–or perhaps even a necessary thing to do to create opportunities for the future. However morally speaking, I think the Nazis are better off in a prison–or any sinful criminals in that matter, with a life sentence, to let them suffer, and realize the sins that they’ve commited. But I know that the resistance can't obtain prisons in the situation that they were in at that time, and in addition to that, it will give them greater risks and burdens that they may not be able to carry.

I think Lisa will face inner conflict as she struggles to decide if what they are doing is really the right thing to do. She might perhaps avoid missions like the one in the chapter and continue on her job of spreading leaflets around the streetcars, or perhaps she will ultimately realize that it is the best thing to do, and help out in bigger missions. The first scenario is unlikely because this is a fictional story, one to inform about our history, but also to entertain the reader. The second scenario is probably better suited, since it will satisfy and stimulate the readers’ mind, and will create bigger suspensions that will most likely build up throughout the chapters until the final showdown (the final event).

Gas is also rationed. Suddenly Susanne rushed into her room, and pulled out a gun. “We’ve got to hide this”, she said. Lisa questions her, and then she finds out that a new member of the resistance sold out the two men that were with them when they bombed the factory, and because of that, they were killed by Susanne for their betrayal. They hid the gun under a floorboard, then Erik came pounding on the door. The Germans declared martial law, and took over the parliament.

With pretty much a certainty, I predict that the Nazis will start rounding up the Jews. It is directly stated within dialogues/internal dialogues of the past few chapters, and the only ones denying it are Erik, and his father. After a whole chapter spent on Lisa trying to convince Erik to come back to Copenhagen, and to safety, I highly doubt that the author will make any plot twists or things like that, especially in a short book like this. And plus, the Germans will, no doubt, round up the Jews, as their hatred for them is undeniable. Another reason that I am so confident in my prediction is the fact that this is a historical fiction, meaning that parts of it may be fictional, but the historical setting is quite accurate to the real world, therefore, since I know for a fact that, the Nazis did indeed, round up Jews (though not so succesful in Denmark) and sent them into concetration camps, I can be sure that they will do the same.

It’s September 30th, both Erik and Lisa ride on her bicycle to Lisa’s apartment. She enters, and sees Anne and Sarah playing. After a quick conversation, Anne and Erik leave, and Lisa makes calls for a couple of hours to Jewish families, warning them. She then packs some clothes for the whole family–one for each, and heads to her father’s hospital. She helps him fill in the fake admission forms for the Jews that will be hiding in the hospital. At around five, her father takes her, and Sarah to the ward, where they’ll be staying. They’re are already some people there, and to her surprise, she meets Erik. However, his father refused to come, so his mother decided to stay with him. Soon Lisa’s mother, and Stefan arrive, and a while later, meals are brought up to them. “I wonder how they make hospital food taste so awful”, Lisa thought.

The decisions they’ve made are obviously not the best ones, or perhaps even the worst one. I think if I shared the same ideas with Erik’s father, I think I would have still taken shelter at the hospital, just in case. You never know what will happen, even if you are so certain, there is always a chance that it might not be the case.

The raids started Friday night, and news that all of their homes had been raided reached Erik. He cried. He screamed. His parents were captured. He had to be injected with a sedative in order for him to calm down. Anyhow, the morning this chapter took place, thirty more Jews arrived through a funeral process–not dead. Lisa finds someone she recognizes–Lissen. She used to go to Jewish School together, once a week–before the invasion, of course. Suddenly, a nurse speaks out from the doorway to get ready to leave. The childrens were given injections in order for them to stay quiet. After a while, they go downstairs, and get in an ambulance–about fifteen people in each. A while later, they reach their destination. They hide in the bushes, to avoid getting caught by the Germans patrolling the area. Suddenly, they hear screaming. Lisa runs toward the sound. He finds a young man’s family–dead, with the expedition of the man, who had a bad cut on his neck. They decided to commit suiacide, but the man was not able to finish what he started.

They had to wait in a house for a while. The fisherman that was taking them to Sweden suddenly requested more money. However, after some time, the boat is ready to take the group, and Lisa has been given the choice of staying, or leaving with the group. Stefan is staying to make sure that everyone can leave safely. In the end, Lisa decides to stay too. They’ll both be leaving tomorrow with the last group. She tells her parents what she has decided to do. They argue, but in the end, Lisa stays. She then meets up with Stefan, and Jesper who is now with him. They give her a silent handgun, and decide to split up, and scout the waterfronts. She’s been tasked to kill one of the German soldiers patrolling the area. “Pop!”, she shoots, and the soldier falls over. She is slightly shocked at the fact that she has just killed someone, but is quickly consoled by Jesper. Within a few minutes, trawlers are sent to transport the Jewish group from the water lines to the motor boat. The group heads to Sweden, and to safety.

I think the main idea/message of these two chapters are expressing how horrible of a place the concentration camps are–which is something we already know about, but it scales it in a way so that death is more of a favorable outcome, than the suffering that the camp inflicts. Of course, dying a fast death is obviously more favorable than dying from extreme pain, and torture, however the pain–or at least what people think of the pain–is indirectly scaled in chapter fourteen, when showing a youg man committing suiacide–or at least attempting to. It expresses how painful and agonizing the concentration camps must have been, for a young man to give up hope of escaping the Nazis, within at most, a few hours from safety. He decided to resign a winnable gamble, because the consequences of failure were so high. That is how painful the concentration camps must be to cloud the judgment of a very bright man.

I rate this novel 4/5. I don’t read war books, so I can’t speak from experience, but others said it was generic, and easy to predict, and I think I can see what they are talking about. However, for me, it was a very different experience. I usually don’t read these genres of books–I only read completely fictional, or informative non-fiction books, but never historical fiction, perhaps some, but not a novel–so I found this quite interesting. For that reason, there may be a little bias towards the ratings, and perhaps I would have a different opinion if I’ve read this book after reading other historical books. Anyhow, I found this book to be very informative to those not so familiar with WWII, and gave me passion to research and learn more about them. This book was also a quick read, and every chapter seemed to have a significance to the plot, and a degree of “deeper meaning”. It made sure that the book kept a good pace–not boring the reader, and not overwhelming them with complex plots. This novel also left the ending for the readers to imagine, which I personally like. Despite perhaps the cons, I still think this is an excellent book to read, and could peel lots of attention to many readers who are perhaps new to historical fiction, and I would definitely recommend it.

The Man He Killed - Poem

The main message of this poem is about the meaninglessness of war–to kill, just because they are
the enemy. A real world connection is the war that was in Afghanistan–most of the soldiers don't
even know why they are fighting for, but simply do because it is their job. Nonetheless, I think
the soldiers, especially war veterans deserve a lot more respect than they do. It’s hard to put
yourself in their shoes, imagining what they had witnessed, or what they had to do. Another
ridiculous thing is that the minimum IQ requirement for joining the military is only 85, meaning
the military is accepting as many people as they can, especially those who are unemployed, and desperate.

Dear Felix Sigurd,

Greetings, I am a young member of the Danish resistance, and I need your help-a problem that requires your advice. I want to make the correct decision,a decision I won't regret. As you may have known, the Nazis are merciless, especially toward Jews like me. I have a sister, one that I care about a lot. This is about her.

My sister has discovered that I work for the resistance, and she is very passionate about joining herself. I told her that it was dangerous, but she won't listen. If anything were to happen to her, it'll be all my fault--I'll be letting everyone down. I admire her passion, and I respect her decisions, but my worry for her is too great.

In the end, I allowed her to join the resistance, but I'm still hesitant that I've made the right decision. Such, I'm asking you. Surely, a patient of yours has faced this kind of dilemma? Did I make the right decision?

I await your response,

Sincerely,

A worried brother

The nightmare didn’t stop when she woke up. The Nazis have invaded Dennmak, and Denmark has surrendered so easly. In fact, she has woken up to a worse nightmare. Soldiers walked on every street, and planes filled the sky. The buzzing of the planes was like that of her nightmare, and it was only just the beginning. This is significant because it is making a connection between the German invasion, and her nightmare, inferring how bad the situation is, and will be.

When Susanne says, ‘That was for Mama and Papa. But it was only the first.’, she is talking about how she is avenging her parents, and she will do more. When Lisa thinks that the Germans are dragging them all down, it is referring to the eye-for-an-eye situation, because they’ve indirectly–but not accidentally–killed the German guards at the factory by exploding it. This is significant because Lisa is wavering whether or not this is truly the right thing to do.

D) “ ‘No, Father, it can’t be!’ I cry. I’m not willing to accept what he’s getting at. What does it matter that we are Jewish? I don’t feel any different than anyone else, and I’m not treated differently. Now will I have to be only a Jew? Is being a Jew all that’s important about me? The very name Eichmann makes me feel sick to my stomach.” (p. 57)

This is about Lisa thinking/questioning, why do Jews have to suffer for just being Jewish? Why does she have to suffer? The way the Nazis are treating the Jewish is pretty much equivlant to racism, or even worse, for making them suffer like that because of their belifs, or even culture. This is significant because it shows how much humanity has improved in the gap between WWII and the current day. I find it hard to believe that the people of that age believed in what Hitler was saying, but I know that back in the day, freedom of speech wasn’t being promoted to the degree of which it is in the present era.

It’s a message for the Jews to flea, because the Nazis will start rounding them up. It will be safer this way. From the dialogue in this chapter, it seems that they are fleeing to Sweden–the country North-East of Denmark. Fortunately, they were notified, because if not, they would all have been doomed.
