The Ulster volunteers formed and armed militia which caused Irish nationalists to form the Irish volunteers. Conflict between these groups progressed in early 1914 because of Home Rule. The war impermanently moderated the crisis.

John Redmond, Irish Parliamentary Party leader, followed suit of Edward Carson and encouraged Irish volunteers to enlist in existing Irish regiments in the British army in September 1914. Some volunteers and the Irish Republican Brotherhood opposed enlistment and planned an insurrection against British rule.

On the 24th of April 1916, Irish rebels took over the Dublin Post Office and other important buildings in the city. Patrick Pearse read a proclamation of independence and the formation of the Republic of Ireland. A battle ensued between the Irish rebels and the British. This event is known as the Easter rising.

On the 29th of April 1916, after 450 deaths, the rebels surrendered. A lot of damage was done to the buildings of Dublin and many civilians sided with the British. When the British executed the leaders of the Rising, however, the Irish regarded these leaders as heroes.

Eamonn de Valera became the president of Sinn Fein in July 1917. He took part in the Easter Rising but was not executed by the British. Due to the British wrongly accusing Sinn Fein for the Easter Rising, Sinn Fein candidates were favoured.
