A year later Khrushchev fell out of power due to the humiliation he faced from retreating. This led to Brezhnev coming to power, and he was much less concerned with reform than prior USSR dictator. The crisis ultimately led to a Soviet arms buildup over the next 20 years because they USSR's military felt inferior after retreating from the US. This eventually led to an increase in the production of American arms as well.
