Answer or Echo o Pose a question to the class and randomly call on a student. ... A different student is then called on, while the first student remains standing. The next student has the same choice, but if the next student also chooses “echo” that student also stands up. I think this is strategy keeps the student's attention and engagement.

Yes. I like the idea of holding students accountable. Every day in class we will answer a warm up question on google classroom. Many times students will not respond and wait for someone else to or they will respond with an "i don't know." I think answer or echo holds them accountable so I would love to try this technique next week!

I think this strategy works well to hold students accountable. I'm thinking of a particular student this would work really well with. He is typically zoned out in class (which leads to him getting away with not being called on or simply saying 'I don't know' and putting his head back down). This activity draws a line in the sand so-to-speak. Even if he isn't paying attention, he will still have to engage in the material.

Haven Hardee- I have been using advanced warning this week since Carla suggested it in our meeting, and it's going great. Before, I would have issues with only a few students answering every time; now, everyone gets assigned a number at the beginning of class, and everyone answers. Nobody gets off the hook, so I've gotten much more participation from students who used to never participate.

Paul Warner: Advance Warning is something I emulate often. I agree you have to make sure it's done fair in order to not have students feel targeted. After a while of using this strategy, students will know they need to have answers ready to go instead of relying on the teacher's answer.

I believe many of us do a rudimentary version of the answer or echo strategy in class without realizing. Asking students for an answer then the whole class for anyone who might be willing to share theirs if that student was not. The answer and echo strategy strengthens this participation because it holds students' attentions accountable and they can't just drift off after not knowing answer. This is something I will certainly try in class but I don't think I will have the students stand up and move as the strategy says it may cause some anxiety.

The advanced warning strategy seems like it will be useful for a couple of "sallies" I am thinking of in particular, however only the long term ones seem doable at this point in time. Letting the student know they will be called on prior to class starting or even the day before can reinforce the fact that they have to be paying attention. The students I am thinking of would neglect to right down any answers or information that would count as an acceptable answer. I think this has to do more with the student's attention and focus in class than anything.

Definitely I can incorporate this strategy into my class. As a Spanish teacher I am continually teaching new vocabulary to them and that includes meaning and pronunciation. So this strategy will help because it gives to the students the confidence to repeat.

By providing an "advanced warning", we can allow students to mentally and emotionally prepare for their response, allowing a more comfortable space to confidently participate and offer responses. In doing so we help to foster an environment of trust and collaboration, rather than a sense of fear when it comes to sharing. This applies well in both the classroom and virtually.
