As a result of this confrontation he is beat up by all four big guys. But before accepting full defeat and taking the final blow from the bullies the girl who questioned his unfamiliar note gesture marks an X on his cheek while announcing so. Cody is wildly confused and questions him, Justin hits him back with a question asking if he actually didn’t know and calling him a gudgy. This new term makes Cody even more confused. Justin explains to Cody that a majority of the students around him are vampires that of course startles Cody. Cody learns of new terms “gadje and jenti”. Gadje meaning not one of them, jenti meaning being one of them.  He also learns that jenti are very allergic to water making him realize the real reason he got into the school. “ We call ourselves JENTOO. Always have. It means “people. “We are mostly the Gentiles here. But there’s always a few Gadzhi, anyway. He starts over thinking about how nothing he does matters and makes a difference to this school. But before he could sink into more negative thoughts he sets up his motivation and actually tries a little on the assignments that were spoken at school that week. Each assignment mentioning how he would like his teachers to grade him as they would a jenti. “I do not know what a Köchel number is, even if it isn’t please give me a real grade, Mr. Mach I don’t want your fake A’s.”(Rees 56.)Next day he hears people talking about him and Ileana referring to him as a “stocker” He sets to find Justin for answers. He finds Justin at his job and meets the librarian named Mrs.Shadwell. As if there wasn’t enough to learn he finds out that these vampires can turn into things such as wolves but they aren’t exactly referred as werewolves. Justin explains to his confusion that jenti can turn into anything they wanted as long as their weight and mass stayed the same.  But after that Cody finds out what he really came here for, what a stoker was. Justin once again explains, to him that a stoker  is what jenti call jenti and gadje who are friends. Which is definitely not a compliment as it originates from the book called Dracula in which Dracula befriended a gadje which ended up betraying him. And writing about all these fake stereotypes over vampires. “ I thought vampires—I mean jenti—turned into bats,” I said. “Hey can you turn yourself into anything?” “Well, it’s complicated,” Justin said. “See, when you turn yourself into anything else, your weight and mass stay just the same. So no one could actually turn into a bat. I mean, what would be the point? Cody enters his shabby little house and learns that’s his mother teaches piano entering. He finds that Justin is very fond of fish and raises angelfish, having had his room filled with them. While feeding the fish he comes to learn about how jenti are fed. Cody learns that jenti really do drink blood to live,but not as often as he thought. During this talk Cody also learns more about Justin and how his father died from being overseas. ““If you want to know,“ Justin said quietly, “we mostly buy it. Pint at a time. It gets expensive, but we have to have it. It’s like air to us.“ “What happens if you don’t get it?“ I asked. “We die.” “I always thought you guys were in mortal,“ I said. “Then where is my father?“ Justin said bitterly.“We die, just like you do. We can live a lot longer; we’re stronger and we can change shape, some of us, but if one of us gets hit by a truck or catches a disease or die all right.””(Rees 69.) Downstairs he finds Ileana taking lessons from his mother. Ileana is welcomed to stay after to hangout with the boys and dinner. Dinner goes the trio got closer and Cody felt less intimidated by the vamps knowing they also eat normal food. After dinner Ileana suggests to play the old game her and Justin would when they were younger in the basement. Justin hesitates as he doesn’t want Cody to think he’s childish but gives in. In the basement Cody finds a big place filled with cities and citizens. Ileana explains the cities and tells about which belong to her and how they work. While getting settled Justin claims his own city and the three of them begin at play as they were children. While at play Cody gets the great motivation and decides to write as one of his year long assignments given from his English teacher a Epic about Illyria. “”While we were drinking our hot chocolate talking about the epic, which I decided I was going to be called The Epic of Illyria, Hamilton Antonescu came to pick up Ileana.””(Rees 79.) Cody gets a ride from Ileana’s dad, on the way home Cody realizes he truly is in love with Ileana and wondered how she felt about him and how her father would feel about him being marked by her. The next day he brings the books to school and gains creativity for one of the epics in his huge English project and starts writing.  Skip to Monday Cody has 10 epics written and is accomplished with all the assignments he had along done and is eager to find out what grades he would receive. Cody is starting to feel more invited to this school as a limousine and chauffeur find him that morning and take him to school. As entering school Cody is taken to the principals office where all his teacher are gathered. All of them proceed to speak to Cody about the assignments turned in all basically explaining how he has a guaranteed A in their class and they won’t grade him fairly. This obviously outrages Cody and questions his principals actions and accuse him of not actually caring about him or the other gadje students. The principal, Horvath explains calmly that his grades are his teachers concern and that they are concerned about him as well and that they all are. This being a lie sets Cody off even more and leaves him angered for the rest of the day. “ I was so mad I could barely talk. I hate to be lied to. It makes me crazy. He did not know any of the rules of waterpolo and neither did his team mates, and his coach was no help as he was just there to be there. He learns that in order to have a full team there has to be people benched, so  the principal chooses random jenti every week to bench in the game. For this game the rival team was very quiet none of them spoke a word and simply just played. The other gadje, Cody’s team members, complained about getting hit and even switched sides leaving Cody alone to try and make an effort to play. As Cody attempts to fight for himself in this game he gets a lot of red flags as almost anything is an instant penalty. The game ends by the opposite team getting a win. “…the judges declared the game over, 1–0 St.Biddulph’s. Everyone got out of the water but me. I swam over to the edge of the pool and hung there, breathing hard and feeling angry and confused. What the hell, weren’t these so called grownups supposed to enforce rules they made up?”(Rees 104.) Cody hated waterpolo, especially since his team also hated him, which made him a little more cautious around the school. The only thing Cody would look forward to every week was visiting Illyria with Ileana and Justin. He would spend time hearing stories, making stories, and writing stories with them throughout this time. As Valentine’s Day approached Cody had thought of gifting Ileana an epic. He had this idea because of Ileana anxiously wanting to hear his work of what he’s done for the past month. So Cody started out fresh and made a new one just for her reciting it in front of her and Justin. This epic was about two men, from Illyria fighting over the heroine. After he finishes reciting the poem Cody sees Ileana burst with laughter. Cody is filled with embarrassment. After the laughter dies down, Ileana suggest for him to bring a more “serious” epic, leaving Cody quiet for the rest of the day. “I could feel my face getting hot. She thought it was funny. It wasn’t funny; it was an epic. His first battle to face is finding the right gift. As Cody is aware, Ileana’s family is very well off and she pretty much owns everything. Cody seeks help from her own childhood best friend Justin. Justin mentions all her favorite kind of things: books, leaves, clouds, stars, seagulls sound, music. Cody starts with getting a fancy expensive blank book for her to write poetry but figures that it isn’t good enough. He then gets his final idea, filling the book with all of her favorite things, though tricky he manages to find a way to store them all in the fancy book he bought. Cody’s gift is ready.”I pasted it onto the last page of Ileana’s book and was ready for the party.”(Rees 126.) Saturday comes and he doesn’t recognize anyone when arriving, he waits outside the house hoping to see Justin to go inside with him. Time goes by and no sign of Justin arriving is shown. Before going in himself he is confronted by his number one enemy, Gregor. Gregor cannot believe he was invited and urges him to show his invitation. Cody follows through and shows him, Gregor leaves with cruel words about how he will never belong. Cody gives him some smart talk and goes inside. He is greeted with an Adam’s Family like butler.  Cody makes small talk with Ileana’s relatives while searching for Justin but has no luck. He makes a phone call and finds out he is at home suck because his family could not afford more blood. Cody jumps to action and excuses himself to visit Justin immediately. He finds Justin and sacrifices a bit of his blood to help his best friend. But in order to share his blood he had to contact Ileana, the girl who marked him for permission. Ileana grants Cody permission and Justin is saved. “‘ In a few minutes, Justin shook his head like he’d been knocked out and was coming back to consciousness. then he smiled at me. “That’s the second time you’ve done the nicest thing for me anyones ever done,” he said.”(Rees 137.)Cody and Justin head to the party and immediately notice a difference. Cody is treated with way more respect and honored at the party. Birthday gift opening comes by and Codys gift is unwrapped. Ileana properly appreciates it but every other guest whispers and talks about it. After opening  gifts a dance is given between Ileana and Gregor. This moment makes Cody realize a lot of things, Ileana being an actual princess, soon queen, and that she is destined to marry Gregor. This sets of Cody and wants to leave, Justin tries to help make him stay but eventually he is excused and leaves. “‘Who cares? I’m just a dumb gadje. Nobody wants me here anyway.” Justin put his hand on my sleeve. “She does. This is due to the fight and the school is at risk of being shut down for not reaching state requirements of having a full water polo team. Cody is quick to find a solution to this problem by having Justin do something no jenti has ever done. Cody convinces Justin to try the water and he does. Once Justin is in it feels natural to him and even takes a new appearance, that of an otter. He refers to this new found form as a “selkie” . Something that makes Justin different from all the other jenti is that he isnt tall and black haired and others also sort of resemble his appearance. Cody gathers all the kids that look sort of like Justin and makes all of them try out swimming for the hope they will be like him and finally get enough members to join the waterpolo team. After tryouts Cody finds Gregor and formally apologizes, Gregor responds with a you’re not so bad and the two have made up. “ I suppose you are not a bad person, gadje. But you are abysmally stupid.” “Thanks,” I said. “I like you too.”(Rees 200.)The solution works and the school is saved. A new team is formed and people from the state come watch the game to see if the school is unfit enough to be shut down. Game begins and everyone in attendance is shocked to see what they thought were hydrophobic vampires swim in water. Soon people from all over the city come to watch the game go down in which they surprisingly win and keep the school open. Cody is of course proud but sad because all though almost the whole city showed, Ileana didn't. “…I hung around a little longer, hoping for one particular person to come up to me, but she was nowhere in sight. They would rebel and go get ice cream “sneakily” during class. The jenti would even come up to Cody asking about gadje fashion trends. All the attention could not fill up the sadness in Cody’s heart without Ileana.  After school, Justin and him would head down to the creek, Justin needed to show him something. At the creek Ileana sat on this huge rock nearby. Ileana invited Cody up and he would go up and speak to her. The two discussed what happened at the cafeteria and Cody explained how he made up with Gregor. Cody finds out that the creek idea was a set up for him to be able to talk to Ileana. The two make up and start holding hands for a while, soon sun goes down and two start heading home. On the way home the two are stopped by what they thought was the principals dog, to actually turn out to be a the real Dracula. Dracula is Ileana’s first ever relative who was disguised as a timber wolf to see how things were with her. Dracula speaks to Ileana about how pleased he is to have her be around such a good person like Cody. And as quick as he was to trick everyone, Dracula disappears leaving Ileana and Cody to catch up to Justin. “And now, descendent, goodbye for a while. Now that you know who Charon is, there is no reason for me to keep that form. And school is nearly out, anyway. I will spend the summer and Capathia with old friends. In the fall, I will return to see how everything is getting on. She and Justin both helped me with it, remembering everything and typing it up. They helped me a lot of the style, too.
