Throughout the short story Rainsford attempts to use different strategies like the Malay man-catcher or the Bermis Tiger pit to escape or at the vary least by some time. Suspense plays a role in not knowing weather these traps will work or not. The author uses things like time restraints, settings (gloomy atmosphere) as well as giving vague details like "He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided." to add to this suspenseful story.

The rising action gives the reader details about the "game" as these details are described the reader is filled with a sudden shock as to why someone would do such a thing which can not be justified by boredom. The generals point of view shows little to absolutely no sympathy for the people being hunted "It's a game you see," to general Zaroff it nothing more than a form of recreation. Upon context such as these and others it is clearly seen that General Zaroff feels no remorse which in effect causes shock.

While the falling action isn't clear it can be insinuated that Zaroff ultimately met his demise and was killed by Rainsford this is a relief to the reader as the game is over for both Rainsford and anyone else being held captive in the cellar. The falling action sates "Splendid! One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed. On guard Rainsford."

There are specific moments in the short story where we see that Rainsford is about to loose his nerves. We see this when the author describes Rainsford's emotions "Rainsford froze there, every muscle tensed for a spring" the author also hints at Rainsford's emotion when mentioning "I must keep my nerve. I must keep my nerve." causing the reader to feel uneasy as well and showing Rainsford's emotions too.
