An influential book, ‘Reaching and Teaching students in poverty: strategies for erasing the opportunity gap.’ This book is a Multicultural Education Series of the book; it is helpful for a teacher’s professional development to build the teaching and learning strategies and skills. It is an outstanding resourceful book. It embraces an intersectional approach to recognizing and interacting with diverse learners, race, gender, language, identity, and experience. Author Dr. Gorski has claimed that students' progress and success depend on teacher expectations. If a teacher puts effort into teaching and sets the expectation level from his students, you can see the flourishing of students in their life. High expectations raise the likelihood of obtaining a higher degree, enrolling in a tertiary education institute, and bringing positive societal and educational changes. It is not possible without teachers' high expectations. Hence, teacher expectations play a vital role in the students' life. 

In Chapter 10, Dr. Gorski has given educators commitments and strategies for school and district leaders to be aware of and learn about the educational outcome disparities and inequalities.

This book speaks to children who may be marked as an outsider because of their language, the color of their skin, or even the food they bring for lunch. It shows that you can connect because of the identities and experiences that make us unique.

This book follows one black family and one white family as they talk about a police shooting in their hometown. This book helps parents to answer questions from kids about what racism is, how to identify it, and what to do about it. 

Nagara, I. (2012). A is for Activist. Triangle Square.

This book uses illustrations and rhymes so kids as young as 2 begin to learn about concepts like civil rights, environmental justice, and allyship. 

Wildman, M & Armstrong, M. (1996). Privilege Revealed: How Invisible Preference Undermines America. NYU Press.

This book focuses on language, the workplace, the implications of comparing racism and sexism, race-based housing privilege, the dream of diversity and the cycle of exclusion, the rule of law and invisible systems of privilege, and the power of law to transform society.

Pod Save the People aims to both dig deep and span wide on issues of race activism, culture, politics, and news. Host DeRay Mckesson, alongside Sam Sinyangwe, Kaya Henderson, and De’Ara Balenger, invites a group of scholars, activists, leaders, and experts to give listeners the information they’re searching for. The podcast tells a complete story that weaves the recent news with past history.

This series of short films features everyday people as they discuss issues of race and identity in America. It gives a much-needed perspective from others living in America on Race and Identity. 

Epic is a multimedia portal; it's a digital library for educators, students, and parents; elementary students can benefit. 

Khan Academy is an American non-profit educational institution that provides students with the most reliable and trusted learning and teaching materials; from elementary to college level. 

Quizlet is the best tool for learning. Teachers or students can create flashcards as learning aid.  It helps for all levels and topics. Students can access different resources. 

Check Your Privilege, founded by Myisha T. Hill, is a guided journey that deepens your awareness of how your actions affect the mental health of Black, Brown, Indigenous, People of Color. 

Ethel’s Club is an online social and wellness club dedicated to celebrating people of color.

Pechakucha is a wonderful social site for learning and teaching. PechaKucha claimed that PechaKucha (Japanese for “chit chat”) is the world’s fastest-growing storytelling platform, used by millions around the globe. 20 slides. 20 seconds of commentary per slide. Global innovators use the PechaKucha platform to create powerful, visually-compelling stories that move audiences in less than 7 minutes.

Pinterest is useful to find graphics and resources links. 

This lesson is important as it teaches the students to recognize the social responsibilities of different characters and to analyze them. Just a few examples are whether the character contributed to the community in the book, whether they solved problems in a peaceful way, and whether they valued diversity and defended human rights. 

Grade Level K - 2

This lesson is important as it not only teaches the importance and the history of the Civil Rights Movement. But that civil rights is something we are still fighting for and something that should be talked about daily. 

Grade Level 5 - 8

This lesson is important as it helps students explore how people are composed of personal and social identities. As well as teaching them the importance of inclusion and acceptance.

Madison, M. (2021). Our Skin: A First Conversation About Race. Rise X Penguin Workshop.

This book is a must have for families and classrooms with preschool and kindergarten-age children. It covers so many topics, starting with identifying and loving your own skin tone. Children also learn why we have different skin tones, and some of the racial labels that people use to correlate all shades of skin. What really sets this book for young children apart is how it explains that the made up idea of race was used to fuel racism. The authors talk about racism not as just individual people being mean, but as a way that white people get power. The book gives children relatable examples of racism that are likely to happen in young children’s worlds. Finally, children are encouraged to challenge racism by speaking up, changing unfair rules, and learning.

This book teaches children the importance of being proud of yourself and your background. 

Kadohata,C. (2019). A Place To Belong. Atheneum/Caitlyn Dlouhy Books.
