Montag's PTSD

In Fahrenheit 451 Guy Montag shows a lot of examples of mental illness throughout the book. In the novel Montag struggles with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This is mainly because of the fact that he was introduced to Clarisse. Clarisse taught him so many things and that basically there is more to life than just burning books. She caused him to end up breaking the law and reading a book. Clarisse is very important to Montag as she opened his eyes to the problems in the society, and shows what the things that matter in life are, it’s the little things that characterizes everyone. Clarisse is like a symbol to Montag, she symbolizes the goods in everyone's lives and the importance of having something important, since Montag holds her important. However this is all taken away from Montag when Clarisse dies and this is also a symbol, where something precious to Montag is taken away by him and it shows Montag’s loss. When Clarisse first disappeared Montag “was certain if he tried the same route, everything would work out fine,” (Bradbury 29). Clarisse is killed by a car and this affects Montag greatly and he can’t seem to forget her, causing PTSD. An instance where we see Montag’s PTSD is when he feared for his life when he almost got ran over by a car and that is the cause of Clarisse’s death, being ran over by a car. As Montag tries to escape from the beetle (automobile), he thinks, “God!God! He dropped a book a book, broke pace, almost turned, changed his mind, plunged on, welling in concrete emptiness, the beetle scuttling after its food,” (Bradbury 121). As Montag’s life was in danger, he thought of Clarisse, who showed him that there so much to life and he suffers from PTSD almost sharing the same fate as her. PTSD is a major part of Fahrenheit 451 as Montag suffers from it through the story.

Montag's Hallucinations

In the novel, Fahrenheit 451 Guy Montag shows mental illness throughout the plot, and it can be inferred that he suffers from hallucinations. Montag used to be a fireman and devoted his life into burning books. However, by the end of the story he is a complete different character. During his time as a fireman, he has due some regrettable things that play into his hallucinations. One example is when he played role in the burning of an old lady who kept books. When arguing with his wife about why he doesn’t feel good he states “We burned a thousand books. We burned a woman ,” (Bradbury 47). It is obvious that Montag feels deep guilt over this and he may hallucinate about why the woman chose to get burned. This would help him ditch his whole existence as a fireman to learn about books. The woman that he burned represents the guilt of montag being a fireman, as all he’s ever done is to burn books and destroying many people’s lives. It is likely, that Beatty is a hallucination as well. Beatty has not had touched Montag but only made threats. At the end, Montag kills Beatty with a flamethrower. After, Montag thought that “Beatty wanted to die,” (Bradbury 116). Beatty could be fake and be a symbol for Montag’s life as a fireman, which he chooses to throw away and destroy.

In the novel, Fahrenheit 451, there were many examples of mental issues such PTSD. This specific illness is portrayed in today’s society as an overlooked problem. This mental illness is a growing issue in the world today and it needs to receive more awareness. For example, an insane 7.7 million Americans above the age of 18 have PTSD (Benson). In addition, approximately 7 percent of all Americans will develop PTSD (Benson). This is a major problem as mental issues can affect physical health and so much more. Not only that but over $42.3 billion is spent annually due to anxiety disorders from PTSD not being treated as well as needed or also by a misdiagnosis because of laziness and not giving full effort (PTSD United). PTSD in today’s society is extremely overlooked and that’s most likely the reasoning behind only only around 57% of these people suffering from the illness are getting help (Benson). Without help, people neglect themselves, distancing themselves from others. Today most people suffering from PTSD and all of its symptoms that come with it are not receiving the attention they need to get through it. Also another reason why this illness needs more awareness is that 17% of all military are female and a whopping 71% develop PTSD by the end of their service (Sidran Institute). In the past year alone the amount of diagnosed military members shot up 50% (Sidran Institute)! In addition to the females in the military, their are one out of ever nine women that develop PTSD in the US (PTSD United). This makes women twice as likely to develop PTSD as men are. Not only is PTSD overlooked but other illnesses dealing with hallucinations are as well. The deal with PTSD is that the people suffering from it have hallucinations when they interact with “triggers”. The person with PTSD hallucinates and their body feels like they are in the same situation when they aren’t and they get the “Fight, Flight, Freeze” sequence (Maletis). These hallucinations can make people go insane if they can’t get proper help because nobody would believe them, when they are convinced they saw and or heard something that’s not actually there (WebMD). As you can probably see this monster of an illness is a growing issue in today’s society and needs to be looked at more closely.
