What do you need to take into consideration when assessing culturally and linguistically diverse learners? In your groups come up with an answer to this question taking into consideration everything we have discussed tonight. In other words be sure to address diversity, assessment and fairness.

Being aware of the students prior knowledge, experience, and diverse background, as well as their English proficiency level (EPL) at the time of the assessment. The students should be tested based on the content material that was taught in the immediate class and not outside information to ensure fairness.

To ensure student assessment is fair, test givers should ensure students are fairly treated during the testing process, have access to the construct as it's being measured, there's a lack of measurement bias, and test scores are valid. To ensure assessment is authentic and culturally relevant, their unique backgrounds and heritage lanaguages should be taken into account (assessment should happen in real, authentic contexts). Additionally, testing should reflect students' measured ELP levels within the content, measurement, and review of the assessment. Assessment should also be flexible and multiple modalities reflected to be an accurate measure of the specific learning aquisition being assessed.

We need to consistently analyze what we are assessing, and remove any barriers and biases our assessments contain. We need to consider our students out-of-school lives, including their cultural and linguistic backgrounds that may influence assessment. Rubrics and other regimented systems that are transparent and understandable to students can support the effectiveness of our assessments.

Group 1 Our assessment should not place anyone at a disadvantage because of the content. Prior educational experience should be taken into account and should be equitable. Assessment should be accessible to all. Results need to reflect a measurement of student learning as opposed to prior experience.
