Classroom management and discipline programs for our LFK lil cats grade K-5. Woolfolk Hoy & Hoy (2013) explain “the aim of classroom management is to maintain a positive, productive learning environment, relatively free of behavior problems” (p. 225).

Students come from a variety of home settings. Not every student has the same set of expectations when they come to school. In the elementary context, this is where it is essential for us to establish their routines and procedures. Our most critical lessons are the establishment of these expectations during the first few weeks of school. These few weeks of practicing routines and procedures will set the pace for the rest of the year and allow more time throughout the year for learning. Dr. Harry Wong explains, “Students do not learn when they are disciplined. They learn when the classroom is organized for learning and success” (as cited by Gill, n.d.). Instead of spending each class period distracted by discipline issues, we can dedicate this time to learning.

The more our students are active and moving in class, the less time they have to become off-task. Woolfolk Hoy & Hoy (2013) explains “Effective teaching and learning depend on motivated students; hence, teachers must know how to stimulate, direct, and maintain high levels of student engagement” (p.25). This year during your observations we will be looking more in depth in how you manage your learning environment, your positive classroom management, and how our teachers deal with discipline issues. Today I am going to give you several options to implement in your lessons, if you do not already do so.
