During a twenty-year career in educational and consumer publishing in Chicago, he served as Biography and Fine Arts editor at the American Peoples Encyclopedia, managing editor of the Greater Cleveland Mathematics Program (Science Research Associates), head of the mathematics department at Encyclopedia Britannica Educational Corporation, Executive Editor of Fuller & Dees Publishing (a division of the Times Mirror Corporation) and Editorial Director of the Society for Visual Education (a division of the Singer Corporation). He also wrote several books, the most notable being Ishmael. He worked on Ishmael from 1975-1991.  It won $500,000 one year before being published.
It has been translated into over 25 different languages. Quinn said that  "You're captives of a civilizational system that more or less compels you to go on destroying the world in order to live." This piece depicts the agricultural revolution, which later would come because of most carbon emissions and deforestation in our modern world. While the agricultural revolution did have its benefits, like the ability to support much larger populations of people. It causes some people to hoard food and deny food to others for pure self-indulgence.

This piece depicts the potato famine.  This relates to Ishmael because it shows people violating the law of limited competition. The English are denying the Irish access to food, resulting in the death of one million Irish people.

The agriculture and farming industry is responsible for 80% of deforestation, 60% of the world's carbon emissions. It is looking to increase in future years.

This refers to Prometheus being chained to a rock and having his liver eaten by a bird every day. This was for giving humans the gift of fire. It also can be seen that people don't if it does directly negatively affects them.

The novel is likely to take place in the late 80s and very early 90's. The book is about a conversation between Ishmael the gorilla and the pupil, who is a middle-aged man. Human pollution negatively impacts other people to a much greater extent than many of us realize. In third world countries, we have stocked pilled garbage and made their water undrinkable. Due to human interference, invertebrate populations have dropped on average 60% since 1970. It was only 52% a few years prior. We have caused the deaths of 83 percent of mammals and half of all plants. Freshwater habitat populations are down 83%. The animal populations in Central America and South America are down 89%. It is estimated that it would millions of years before species will fully recover and that is if we stopped polluting now.
