Approach to being a researcher
'Philosophers have interpreted the world, the point is to change it'. (Marx / critical social theory in general)
'There's nothing as practical as good theory' (Pawson and theory-based evaluation)
'Make the exotic mundane, and the mundane exotic, in order in both cases to make clear what is taken for granted'. (Bourdieu)

Research approach
Qualitative methodologies. Anything with numbers send me running to Alex Bond in floods of tears - a personal preference for people and words, rather than anything fundamentally paradigmatic.

Research Interests in SfD (my work has been primarily UK focused, but i'm keen to expand my horizons)
- Application of Theory-based and Realist Evaluation Methodology including the now ubiquitous use(!) of Theories of Change (Pawson and Tilley, Weiss)
- Practice, Process, and Politics of MEL (Coalter, Darnell, Kay)
- Critical social and political theoretical perspectives (Bourdieu, Raymond Williams and Stuart Hall [Gramsci], Foucault) providing insights into power dynamic within and between organisations (be that delivery partners, funding agencies, policymakers, government...).
- Governance and politics of UK SfD, drawing on e.g. Bevir and Rhodes.
- 'Traditional sport development' concerns around participation issues and challenges around inclusion, equity, and diversity.

Academic background / approach
I am a micro-sociologist and I mostly use rather conventional ethnographic methods (observations and interviews). I am rather ignorant about quantitative methods.

Among my preferred theoretical perspectives/concepts (or the ones I think I'm more familiar with) are: R. Collins’s Interaction Ritual Theory; E. Goffman’s micro-rituals dramaturgy; V. Turner’s liminality; H. Eichberg’s trialectic.


SfD background / experiences
Some experiences of (rather naïve) international development work with small charities in Kosovo and Bosnia in the early 2000s.

As part of my PhD on football and inter-ethnic conflicts in post-war Bosnia, I did ethnographic fieldwork on the Open Fun Football Schools project (https://ccpa.eu/history/) in 2003-2005.

Between 2006 and 2013 I did research on the Mondiali Antirazzisti (Antiracist World Cup) – see https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/02614367.2013.855937 and https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S016073831930204X. 

I used to be a youth football coach and I have a Uefa B coaching licence, though unfortunately I haven’t used it in the last decade.
