"More weight..." (236). This was the last known setting of Giles Corey where he was being pressed by stone until he died in silence for not giving up the name of the man who had overheard Putnam, and refused to admit to his indictment. However, Giles Corey lived on the outer edge of Salem and in court trying to give proof of innocence for people. He is an almost recluse compared to many of the people in terms of where he lives.

When Giles Corey found that his wife had been arrested because of Thomas Putnam he immediately went to try to get her released. He did this by trying to tell the court that Thomas Putnam was just accusing people for revenge or to get their land. "The proof is there! I have it from an honest man who heard Putnam say it! The day his daughter cried out on Jacobs, he said she'd give him a fair piece of land." (214). Giles is a very fair and trustworthy old man, especially when compared to many of the other people in the Salem community during this time.

The near best line of the play and a huge part to Giles personality is, "More...weight."(236). Giles Corey says this in the face of death while under an extreme amount of weight because he wouldn't name names. He says this with the most strength any character in the play has, showing his beliefs and purpose. This is so important to him that they are his last words. Giles Corey is such a prominent figure in Salem, that it was his death that made people second guess the entirety of the situation.

Giles Corey seems to have somewhat of a cold but fair reaction to others. He doesn't seem to like to many people but would stand up to anyone for anybody who deserved it. "I have here an accusation by Mr. Corey against you. He states that you coldly prompted your daughter to cry witchery upon George Jacobs that is now in jail." (214). in this act, Giles goes to the court with a few others to try to get his wife and George Jacobs set free because they didn't deserve to be imprisoned or hanged.

Giles Corey was a fair, courageous, and loving character. He showed compassion for his friends and family. He also refused to give into the paranoia and mass hysteria caused by the belief of witches. Instead "he (stood) mute," rather than naming names (235). In this play although he is a very strong character, he serves as a comedic relief. He shows his strength when he says "More weight," when being pressed for not admitting what he did (236). It is also seen that he feels very bad for having gotten his wife jailed even though he had had absolutely no intention of that happening. He believed that he might already "burn in hell," for what he did to her, let alone naming more names (214). He was a good, courageous, loving and fair person especially when it came to family and friends.

The song Holding Out for a Hero by Bonnie Tyler represents Giles Corey because in the song she sings, "I need a hero. I'm holding out for a hero till the morning light. He's got to be strong, he's got to be fast, he's got to be fresh from the fight." This has Giles Corey in it because his wife is waiting for him to free her and he's strong. He's fast because it took him almost no time at all to get to the courthouse and get in a fight with Danforth, which is where the fresh from the fight lyrics come into play.
