He showed compassion for his friends and family. He also refused to give into the paranoia and mass hysteria caused by the belief of witches. Instead "he (stood) mute," rather than naming names (235). In this play although he is a very strong character, he serves as a comedic relief. He shows his strength when he says "More weight," when being pressed for not admitting what he did (236). It is also seen that he feels very bad for having gotten his wife jailed even though he had had absolutely no intention of that happening. He believed that he might already "burn in hell," for what he did to her, let alone naming more names (214). This has Giles Corey in it because his wife is waiting for him to free her and he's strong.
