<title>&quot; In my room, I pulled my backpack out from under my bed, and took a pile of T-shirts off a shelf, laying them flat in my bag. And I broke down. The emotion caught me off guard. I hadn&#39;t cried in years, and I was really sobbing.&quot; (Page 54, Part I)</title>

<title>Conor cries in his room alone after telling the kids that he was not sure when he was going to be back because he felt like he was betraying the children. The children in the orphanage were very poor and just scraping by and they were still happy. Conor didn&#39;t think it was right to go and abandon them, have almost a year of fun, and never return to start anew life without doing anything else for the kids.</title>

<title>&quot;&#39;Okay, Raju... okay, I&#39;m up. What festival?&#39; He paused, and the bemused sliver of his face showed that the question had caught him off guard. &#39;I don&#39;t know, Brother!&#39; None of the kids knew. It was simply &#39;Festival&#39;&quot; (Page 65, Part II)</title>

<title>Conor was shocked that even though there seemed to be a festival, none of the children knew what the festival was for. This restated to Conor that the children were so poor that they had festivals without knowing why. This also told Conor that even though the children are in poverty, that they are still people that enjoy festivals and life with optimistic views.</title>

<title>&quot;Haunting me were the last words I has said to the children before I left them. Somebody would take them to a safe place, where there would be many children and they could go to school and be well fed and sleep in beds and have proper shoes. They didn&#39;t believe it. I sat beside them and looked them in the eye and told them that this time, it was true.&quot; (Page 101, Part III)</title>

<title>Conor was guilty that he had given the children hope that they would have better lives only to be deceived in the same way they were when they were first abducted. This guilt makes Conor commit to trying to save the children even though he most likely realizes that it would be nearly impossible to find all of them. The guilt Conor has surpasses his own desires and starts his path to finding the seven children.</title>

<title>&quot; Then suddenly, like a brick between the eyes, it hit me, the one who looked like Navin, was Navin. The boy I had lost and then found. and his brother, next to him, who looked like Madan, was the real Madan. I leaped to my feet. The man walking toward me was their father; I had met him in my first days in Humla. (Page 218, Part IV) </title>

<title>Conor seeing Navin and Madan with their father made the whole trip to Humla worth it for him. He had to endure his injured knee while hiking in an area he knew was dangerous. By seeing them, it made Conor realize that he had accomplished what he set out to do and felt proud that he helped the children reunite with their families.</title>

<title>&quot;&#39;It&#39;s not that, I am happy, the trip went well- but I think I need a break. I was thinking I might go back to the States for a bit, maybe six weeks.&#39;... &#39;It is time for your break&#39; he said. &#39;And I think Liz will be happy to see you, too.&#39; &#39;She better be,&#39; I said, taking a deep breath. &#39;I&#39;m going to ask her to marry me.&#39;&quot; (Page 263, Part V)</title>

<title>Conor fell in love with Liz but without seeing her too often, there is a chance she could be taken by another man. Knowing this, Conor&#39;s only option to stay with Liz is to ask her to marry him. He finds himself as not worthy for her since he has no money and works outside of the states. Even though he believes this, he still feels like this is one of the only times he could go and ask Liz to marry him.</title>
