Bowling Pin Analogy- Rachel Chan

I like the analogy. I like the idea of sweeping up everyone with a curve. I like the point that all learners benefit from more choice and clarity, not just the children at the edges.

I have taught dyslexic children, children with processing and working memory challenges. I have worked with children with ADD and ADHD. I have also taught children who struggle with fixed mindset and self-belief issues. Many multi-lingual learners too. I have worked with children who need tools to help them get into the learning zone - calming, focusing, self-regulating. I am sure there are more that I could think of, but these are the ones that pop up.

Pre-teaching vocabulary, using dictionaries and thesaurus (books and chromebooks) for children to look up meanings. Display the words, make crosswords, quizzes, matching games for children to reinforce knowledge. Wordwall.net is very useful. I will go away and work on pictures to support this. Getting children to draw pictures of the definition also helps.

The bowling pin analogy -Sheila O'Shea

The bowling pin analogy reminds me of Todd Rose and 'The End of Average'. Learner variability is the rule rather than the exception and if we aim to the edges then the middle will take care of itself. I find the bowling pin analogy helps me to think about the strengths of the students I work with. Planning and design for the edges of the group, to have accessibility and extension planned for from the start is my goal when it comes to being more inclusive.
