Mental Health is one of the least obvious burden of diseases but also one of the most prevalent across the globe. This is especially relevant in lower-resource countries where war, less healthcare accessibility, and disease is most common. This fact is worsened by specific cultures and populations going out of their way and rejecting support for mental health diseases as well. In order to provide for better global mental health, fundamental policy changes need to be made as citizen mental health is a result/consequence of poor policy.

In this fight for a better global mental health, we need to be aware of the barriers in achieving it. One of the main barriers is inequitable accessibility. Very often, through both low-resource and high-resource countries, only the rich can afford mental health treatment. As public health officials, we need to realize these barriers and create policies/interventions in breaking them down. This political cartoon showcases the exact problem.

This pie chart puts into perspective how prevalent mental health disorders really are. We, as a society, may think that only a few unlucky people may be associated with mental health disorders. But this is really not the case as 28% of diseases worldwide are mental health related.

This article explains both the challenges and oppurtunities in addressing mental health concerns within low-middle income countries. Most of these challenges are due to specific cultural contexts within populations. As mentioned in the article, addressing these concerns can only be done through a multitude of policy changes such as "political will and strengthened legislation, improved resource allocation and strategic organisation, integrated packages of care underpinned by professional communication and training..." (Rathod et. al 2017).
