During Polk's Presidency, he advocated for expansion and desired both California and New Mexico territories from Mexico. Polk's Manifest Destiny desire and Mexico's unwillingness to sell their land led to the War. This desire for new land and the great movement of native born Americans to these territories who disobeyed Mexican law fueled the feeling of Manifest Destiny. Later on after the war disagreements sprang up on the issue of free versus slave states in these new territories which eventually led to the Civil War.

1845 Texas is Admitted to the Union

Many American citizens were already living in the territory of Texas, but when Texas was admitted to the Union there were also many native Mexican individuals who were automatically considered American citizens. This act both expanded US territory during the feeling of Manifest Destiny and diversified the definition of the American citizen. Many of those native Mexican individuals were discriminated against by the native born Americans and those interracial communities created tension. Many northerners were worried with adding another slave state such as Texas to the union. These tensions led to the Civil War.

1846 America's 54 40' or Fight

During the strong feeling of Manifest Destiny some 5,000 settlers moved to Oregon's Willamette Valley. President Polk wanted to extend the Oregon border to 54 40' parallel and said he would take up arms against the British if this goal was not achieved. However, after negotiation the border was set at the 49th parallel. Oregon attracted many more American settlers for many following years as the United States territory expanded west, instilling a greater Manifest Destiny Spirit in the hearts of Americans. In this case the compromise in 1846 to set the boundary at the 49th parallel kept America out of war with the British while in the south they weren't so lucky in avoiding war with Mexico. Oregon was admitted as a free state which led to more heated arguments over the process of admitting slave and free states and how to keep them equal.

February 2, 1848Treaty of Guadalupe

After approximately two years of war with Mexico the Treaty of Guadalupe was signed which ended the War and gave America territorial expansion satisfying Manifest Destiny. It was the most land acquired at one time for America since the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The new land also brought a lot more diversity to America for all of the Mexican citizens living in those territories were automatically considered American citizens after the treaty. Many conflicts arose between the true Mexican citizens and Americans which caused a period of turmoil in these lands. One of the most pressing issues with theacquired land was how they were to decide which states would become slave states and which states would become free states. These conflicts in drawing the border between slave and free states ultimately led to the South seceding from the Union at the start of the Civil War.

During this period over 80,000 men migrated to California to search for gold and get rich quickly many of them Chinese immigrants. This incredible territorial expansion west brought a major increase to California's population. This major population increase and diversity increase in the west brought discrimination and hardship especially to the Chinese immigrants. With California being admitted as a free state in 1850, conflicts between the north and the south out east escalated more drastically leading to the Civil War.

Western expansion due to Manifest Destiny led to important industry development in the west. This development prompted the desire for America to trade with countries across the Pacific and in 1854 after almost 200 years of isolation, Commodore Perry opens Japan to the west. This affected territorial expansion because with Japanese resources more people moved west. The more industrial north benefited more from Japan's resources and this led to more conflict for the Civil War.
