Overview of Results

Overall, my assessment results reflect a balanced mix of competencies. I demonstrated strengths in ethical and professional behavior areas, while specific competencies related to program management and data analysis emerged as areas requiring further development.

Areas for Improvement

One area I identified for improvement is balancing confidentiality and parental rights. Recognizing the ethical obligation for privacy primarily towards students while balancing this with parents' or guardians' legal and inherent rights is crucial in school counseling. To improve in this area, I will focus on developing a deeper understanding of the ethical standards and legal implications. I plan to participate in workshops and seek mentorship from experienced counselors to navigate these situations effectively. By doing so, I aim to find that perfect balance in protecting students' rights while respecting parental involvement. According to the ASCA Ethical Standards, "Recognize their primary ethical obligation for confidentiality is to the students but balance that obligation with an understanding of parents’/guardians’ legal and inherent rights to be the guiding voice in their children’s lives. School counselors understand the need to balance students’ ethical rights to make choices, their capacity to give consent or assent, and parental or familial legal rights and responsibilities to make decisions on their child’s behalf" (American School Counselor Association, 2016, A.2.c).

Another area that requires improvement is my engagement with community resources to enhance the school and community environment. To provide students with a culturally responsive school counseling program that promotes academic, career, and social/emotional development, it is essential to delve into more community resources. This will help in fostering equitable opportunity and achievement outcomes for all students. Collaborating with administration, teachers, staff, and stakeholders is crucial for achieving equitable school improvement goals. According to the ASCA Ethical Standards, school counselors should "Provide students with a culturally responsive school counseling program that promotes academic, career, and social/emotional development and equitable opportunity and achievement outcomes for all students" and "Collaborate with administration, teachers, staff, and stakeholders for equitable school improvement goals" (American School Counselor Association, 2016, A.3.a and A.3.b).

As Hartline and Cobia (2020) state, "School counselors must demonstrate that their school counseling program is making a difference and closing achievement gaps" (p. 72). This underscores my need to engage more deeply with community resources to support students effectively. I am excited to search for resources to help better the population of children I decide to serve!

According to the ASCA, Program Assessment evaluates the overall effectiveness of the school counseling program through comprehensive data collection and analysis, informing necessary program improvements. Annual Results Reports measure the outcomes of counseling interventions, focusing on student achievement, attendance, and behavior to demonstrate program impact. School Counselor Assessment and Appraisal evaluates counselor performance, focusing on competencies, adherence to ethical standards, and professional growth.

I selected a high school College and Career Readiness lesson plan for my review. The selected Mindsets and Behaviors matched the lesson topic by emphasizing career planning and college readiness skills. However, I would also include Self-confidence in the ability to succeed (M 1) to ensure students believe in their capacity to achieve their career goals.

The ASCA Student Standards Pre- and Post-Assessment Items align well with the lesson topic by measuring student knowledge and attitudes toward career planning changes. However, they may not fully capture soft skills like self-advocacy and resilience, which are crucial for college success. The lesson content and materials matched the selected skills, providing practical tools and information for career planning. Any discrepancies might be due to the lesson's lack of real-life practice opportunities.

Timing is critical in delivering lessons and holding small group sessions. Limited time might restrict practice opportunities, limiting the depth of understanding and application of the skills learned. Timing constraints could also impact the lesson results, making follow-up sessions essential.

School counselors often share lesson plans to address similar student challenges, but every school, population, culture, developmental level, and counselor is unique. I would incorporate interactive workshops with college admissions representatives and career professionals to align the lesson plan with my creativity, knowledge of the ASCA National Model, and skillset. This approach would provide students with real-world insights and experiences, ensuring a more comprehensive understanding of career planning. Additionally, I would include more hands-on activities and personalized guidance to address diverse student needs effectively.

Areas of Strength

A key strength is my commitment to supporting student development. School counselors are primarily obligated to the students, who are to be treated with dignity and respect as unique individuals. I am dedicated to fostering and affirming all students, their identity, and psychosocial development. This is reflected in the ASCA Ethical Standards: "Have a primary obligation to the students, who are to be treated with dignity and respect as unique individuals. Foster and affirm all students and their identity and psychosocial development" (American School Counselor Association 2016, A.1.a and A.1.b).

Another strength is my ability to provide and advocate for all students’ academic, career, and social/emotional planning. This involves supporting students' choice of career and postsecondary options. I will continue to identify and examine gaps in college and career access and address intentional and unintentional biases in postsecondary and career counseling. As the ASCA Ethical Standards state, it is essential to "Provide and advocate for all students’ pre-K–postsecondary career awareness, exploration, and postsecondary planning and decision-making to support students’ right to choose from the wide array of career and postsecondary options, including but not limited to college/university, career and technical school, military or workforce. Identify and examine gaps in college and career access and address intentional and unintentional biases in postsecondary and career counseling" (American School Counselor Association, 2016, A.4.b and A.4.c).

My abilities and confidence are due to my current case management experience and skills. Improving a child's social-emotional learning can also be equated to kindness and a client-centered, or in this instance, child-centered style. This approach allows me to effectively support and nurture students' development holistically. Dilts (2019) states that school counselors should incorporate "organizational assessments and tools that are concrete, clearly delineated, and reflective of the school's needs." This will help me structure my approach to better support the students.

Conclusion

The self-assessment process has highlighted my strengths and growth areas, providing a clear direction for my professional development. By focusing on data-driven decision-making, engaging with community resources, and program management, I aim to enhance my competencies and become a well-rounded school counselor. Engaging in continuous learning and seeking mentorship will be key strategies in achieving these goals. Wilkerson and Eschbach (2009) emphasize the importance of training in data-driven practices, stating that "graduate students perceived themselves as better prepared to implement the ASCA National Model after receiving training" (p. 35). This reinforces my commitment to ongoing professional development.

References

American School Counselor Association. (2016).
