I am a public elementary school teacher. I decided to apply for this course because my lack of conversational Spanish gives me a poor reputation considering my position, I believe. Not only this but I would like to be able to call Spanish-only-speaking families and discuss school-related questions and content. Knowing Spanish would make new students to my school feel more comfortable and welcome.

My name is Dr. Harriette Vimegnon. I am a middle school principal in Portland, Oregon. Twenty-five percent of my students are Spanish Speaking. I would like to learn Spanish so that I can better communicate with my students, and their families. Thank you for the scholarship, I greatly appreciate it!

I recently moved to San Diego, where I work for the San Diego County Office of Education. Many students and teachers in San Diego County speak Spanish as native or heritage speakers. I applied for this course in order to begin learning Spanish, and I hope it will be a strong foundation for continued learning. I really feel it is my duty, working with so many Spanish-speaking students, families, and teachers, to learn Spanish.

I have enrolled into this class so I would be able to provide support to English and Spanish speaking staff and community members. The largest percent of families we serve are of the Hispanic community. By taking this class I am hoping it will give me an opportunity to help more people.

I feel quite confident about this chance since I know that this program will help me improve my Spanish communication skills. Even though I've taken part in a few language programs in the past, they haven't given me the proficiency I need to completely understand spoken Spanish, which makes it difficult for me to respond and communicate effectively.
