In the process, he helped improve the way people live. He started a company, then another, and was an inventor/ investor. His innovations helped him continue to evolve through each decade. Westinghouse supplied the world’s first commercial pressurized water reactor (PWR) in 1957 in Shippingport, Pa. Today, there are more than 430 nuclear power reactors in operation worldwide. Westinghouse technology is the basis for about half of these reactors, giving Westinghouse the world’s largest installed base of operating plants. He was the founder, inventor, organizer, and more than any other man, With the desire to turn ideas into enterprises, he founded Westinghouse Electric and 59 other companies, eventually receiving more than 360 patents for his work. Born in Central Bridge New York on Oct. 6, 1846, George Westinghouse was the eighth of 10 children. When the family moved his father established a shop for agricultural machinery and small steam engines. After he served in the Union Army during the Civil War, and briefly attending college, Westinghouse returned to his father's shop where, in 1865, he developed and patented a rotary steam engine. That same year he invented a device for placing train cars back on their track. Which are basically an air brake for trains to keep them on track.

He received his first patents in 1865. His rotary steam engine proved it was not successful, but the car-replacer he designed to restore derailed cars to their tracks was successfully marketed and patented. Westinghouse introduced the basis of his fortune when he patented his first air-brake invention in 1869 and organized the Westinghouse Air Brake Company. A number of patented improvements were created, including the truly revolutionary automatic air brake for trains 1872. He also worked to make all air-brake apparatus standardized and interchangeable. His main success was derived from the air brakes. First, air storage tanks are filled with compressed air by the compressor, which is powered by the engine. When the driver steps on the brake pedal, or treadle valve, this allows air from the storage tanks to flow into the cylinder, pushing the piston down the cylinder. This is the main service of the whole system. To help make the braking more efficient and keep the train on the track.

He purchased Nikola Tesla's patents and hired him to improve his AC motor for use in Westinghouse's new power system. Not to mention his new method of brakes has created much more efficient trains for the people. Furthermore, he was one of one of the true origin entrepreneurs in America creating business companies and helping transportation solving problems while capitalizing on those innovations helping the economy and making the society more developed in terms of technology. George Westinghouse invented a new braking system. His next project centered around electrical power distribution. Although Edison had already developed a direct current electrical flow it was restrictive and only allowed for a limited number of consumers. Instead, his idea centered around an alternating current which covered more ground and serviced a larger number of consumers in use electricity. In 1886 he formed the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company and in 1889 he renamed it as Westinghouse Electrical Corporation. Which later became a great household name. In 1891 George Westinghouse decided to build his own hydroelectric AC plant. His main legacy was saving people's lives with his safer technology. One of his other inventions was a compressed air shock absorber for automobile suspension, however, it was not the main cause for success. One of the main reasons for his success was his great partnership with Tesla. Furthermore we see he not only a businessman he is truly an problem solver. He came from really humble beginnings and this helped fuel his love building, from many inventions the birth of the air brake came and with it came numerous benefits.
