I chose this self-portrait because it portrays who I am. I feel like I am stylish when I want to be. I love to go shopping and find what the new trend is. I also feel like this photo displays my personality, which can sometimes be goofy. Although I use to not be this way, I am very shy unless I am around those who I have known for a while. I am only myself around those I have spent a lot of time with. This picture was taken in Atlanta while I was doing a photo shoot for my friend. During the photo shoot I was able to dress cute and act goofy, two of my favorite things!

Although I now believe that literacy can be things other than books, books will still be my number one. I am absolutely in love with children's literature and I get so excited when I read a new book. I think reading is important to the school day. In 5 years I can see myself being a flexible teacher during independent reading. I want to have flexible seating like rugs and reading chairs for the students, and I hope to have multiple books that are different reading levels so all of the students will have something to read. Children's literature will always be one of my passions.

My Strength on Teaching Culturally Diverse Students

My strength on teaching culturally diverse students would be my diversity in social class. I grew up in a home where my family had a good bit of money that they spent on things that I may have wanted instead of needed. I also know how it feels not to have money. As I have gotten older, I have not been allowed to rely on my parents for things, because well I am an adult now. I have no job, so I have not been able to have those privileges I use to have. My fiancé grew up a trailer where he didn't have as many things as I did growing up. So I definitely see many sides to the social classes and I feel like I can somewhat to relate to the students when it comes to that.

I think my struggles with teaching culturally diverse students will be about their religion. Students are going to talk about their religion at school and what they believe in or at least their parents might at conferences or when I first meet them. I am not one to judge someones' beliefs. I do, however, believe my religion is the right one. If a parents comes into the classroom and explains to me that they worship the devil, I may have a hard time keeping my mouth shut; only because I want them to have eternal life in Heaven with God. Part of this job though is to be as private as possible about things like beliefs and values. Being a teacher is all about loving and accepting each student in the classroom no matter where they come from.

I believe that anything you can read can be considered good literacy. Before taking ELAN 3000, I only thought that reading a book was literacy, whether that be a physical book or one on a Kindle. After taking the class, I have realized that there are many things that could be considered good literacy. The activity that really stuck with me this semester was when we walked through the hallways finding new literacies. I now understand that a stop sign, a bulletin board, and even a coke can can be considered literacy.

My favorite place to read would have to be on the couch, in the dark, with a lamp on. It is so comfortable and it is the place I can relax and concentrate. But while I'm reading, there must not be any distractions. I can not read or concentrate when there are other things going on. The couch is just somewhere I can relax and read, although sometimes I do fall asleep.

My favorite literacy would have to be singing. I have been singing since I was 4 years old. My cousins were in a singing group, so every time we went to go listen to them, they would pull me up on stage to sing the song "Mary and Martha."Ever since then I started singing more and more at church. I never got to take singing lessons, but it is something I enjoy very much. I can't read music notes and I am trying to play the piano, but I just really enjoy reading lyrics to songs and connecting to them. Singing would have to be my favorite literacy experience.

Ever since I was in my mom's tummy I have been attending church. It has something that has become very important to me because I get to learn about Jesus, fellowship with other believers, and volunteer to help people. Growing up, I lived in a home where Christ was the center of everything. Every time we ate or did anything, we thanked God. Although I know some people give Christians a bad name, I consider myself one that is open to anyone and any situation. I chose this picture as a representation of my beliefs because, yes Christmas is a time for santa and giving, but it is mainly about Jesus and what he did for us.

I have about 21 pairs of toms, a toms blanket, a toms scarf, and toms coffee cups. This means that 24 kids in a different culture received a pair of toms shoes. I am fearful for those children who don't have privileges such as shoes. I am a firm believer in helping children who cannot help themselves and their parents are doing everything they can for their kids.

My grandmother, Shirley Mae, is my inspiration. She is the sweetest and funniest lady you will ever meet. I am so glad to call her my grandmother. Not only did she adopt my mother, but she raised 6 children which includes a set of twins. A few years ago my grandmother lost one of her sons, one of her daughters (one of the twins), and her husband all in 3 months. This means that I lost my uncle, aunt, and my grandfather. Not only was she stuck in a home all alone, but she had to pack up everything and move to a smaller house on one of the her son's land. Through everything, she stayed strong and was still positive after everything she had gone through. A few months ago my uncle, one of my grandmother's sons, was arrested and the police took everything. This was the same uncle that my grandmother was living on his land. My uncle then told my grandmother that she needed to move somewhere else. My mother being the generous woman that she is, bought a mobile home and is now fixing it up for my grandmother to move into. I am just so thankful to have my grandmother in my life.

Generous means showing a readiness to give more of something, as money or time, that is strictly necessary or expected. Another definition is showing kindness toward others. I may not have money or expensive goods, but I am always willing to give up my time to help others. At church I help in the Pre-school room and I volunteer at anything going on around town.

*Blue Eyed Girl* is what they call me. I was definitely born with my mother's eyes. People tell me that I have very pretty eyes, and well I would have to agree. When I was in the 3rd grade, a boy in my class had one of those sticky hands that you throw against the wall and it sticks. Well at lunch one day, the boy pulled back the slimy hand and well it hit my right in the eye. My blood vessel busted in my eye and now I have a distinct brown spot in one of my eyes. I still love my eyes though!

This couch is my favorite place in my home. Not only is it really comfortable, but it's just somewhere I spend most of my time. This couch is where I watch TV, take naps, do school work, and eat. The couch is located in the living room where my family mostly hangs out. The TV is located in the living room and the fire place. I guess I love this room because it's place where my family spends time together, and family is very important to me.

Lindsey Marie Malcom is my name and it came from a girl named Lindsey Alley in the Mickey Mouse club, which is probably why I have so much talent! The Scottish and American name Lindsey means- From the island of the lime tree. In biblical context, Lindsey means the teil tree (linden or lime tree). The teil tree is a tall evergreen tree commonly growing in Palestine. Marie is an English baby name and the meaning of the name is bitter. I was named Marie because my great aunt whose name is Marie Hearn. I was almost given the name Christina, but my mom decided to stick with Lindsey.

1. While doing this project, I have realized that all of these things are tied together. They all have to do with literacy in some way. It all starts with where you love to read and then how you would incorporate reading into your own classroom.

2. I have learned that when I become a teacher, I must love and accept every student as they are, even if they are not exactly like me.

3. The awareness of who I am affects my teaching by giving students in the classroom privileges. Students may not have what they need at home. I would like to make my classroom feel like home for students.

4. I think it can be important to share some of your culture with your students because some of the students may be able to relate to you. I feel like there are some things that should not be shared in the classroom about your culture like religion.

5. I feel as though it is very important for teachers not to be judgmental about a students' culture. Some teachers who can not let go of their judgments may blame a student/fail them because of their culture and who they are.

6. As a teacher, you must understand that your students learn from their families at home. They may learn something that isn't right or they may be learning something valuable from their families. The teacher must take what the students already know and promote a culturally responsive classroom.

7. Some funds of knowledge that I bring to the classroom is everything I have learned in the education program, everything I have learned in field, and everything I have experienced in life up to this point in life-being creative

8. I believe in students approaching something the way they want to, unless it is just inappropriate. I would hate to change a students' way of thinking because it's not the way the whole school is doing it. Some students may come over from a different country and the way they write may be completely different from the way the other students were taught. I would not just shoot that student down, but I would try to teach them the way the other students are doing it.

9. I have learned that books are not the only form of literacy. Literacy can be many things that the students can read such as: brand named items, text messages, or snacks. I have learned that I need to incorporate other forms of literacy in my teaching and not just a regular book.

A couple of years ago I went through a really hard time with a guy I thought I loved. He truly hurt me but I just couldn't let him go. I became very depressed, to the point where I was getting sick after I ate something. I had come to the realization that I could not let him control how I felt. I received a daily devotional for Christmas and I started to do it every night. The daily devotional allowed me to read God's word, pray to God about how I wanted to get better, and I was able to write down my feelings. Instead of obsessing over this guy I was able to focus on God and what He wanted for my life. Once I was focused on God, He brought to me the man he wanted for me.
