Regulating junk food will cause people to become healthy without a choice. Kids are more likely to choose healthy meals if they have a toy or prise in them or the unhealthy meal without the toy. In the second article, the writer says, “Canadian researchers report that kids are three times more likely to choose healthier meals if those meals come with a toy and the regular ones do not. When it comes to kids’ food choices, the meal with the toy is invariably the default.” Yes, kids my chose the meal with the toy but most kids will still chose the meal that taste better. It should be the citizens right to choose what to eat and when to eat it. In another article the writer says, “When faced with the facts about the dangers of consuming foods prepared with trans fats, shouldn’t it ultimately be each citizen’s right to choose whether or not to consume foods prepared with the controversial item?” The consumer should be able to choose what to eat. A healthy person that does everything right should be able to choose when they want to slack off a eat some ice cream. But the government wants to control what foods are eaten.

However reducing the levels of fat and sugar in products have reduced the amount of consumption in people’s everyday lives in New York. Ryan states “The American Beverage Association has previously criticized that soda is being targeted as a culprit in the obesity epidemic over other factors.”(Jaslow,1). The sugars in products have been proven unhealthy in some cases such as sodas and packaged desserts. While fats and sugars are unhealthy in some levels this still does not limit the amount consumption because the food and drink items can still be available somewhere else. “...the ban may not be as effective as officials hope, given people will still be able to buy sugary drinks such as Big Gulps at 7-11 convenience stores” (Congro,1). Even with the ban of unhealthy food choices, people will still be able to buy sugary, fatty foods in New York. The new regulation is simply unreasonable.

Some people, like Bert Glass, believe that these bans will put our values of freedom at risk.
The government should regulate what people eat. Some people don’t care about some foods being bad for you, but plenty of other people do. These include, among others, officials who must spend taxpayer dollars to care for the health of people with obesity-related chronic illnesses, employers dealing with a chronically ill workforce, the parents and teachers of overweight children, dentists who treat tooth decay, and a military desperate for recruits who can meet fitness standards.

Some might say that having a regulation on what we eat and drink would have a positive impact on our health. For example, “Economists say, obesity and its consequences cost our society $190 billion annually in health care and lost productivity, so health officials increasingly want to find equally effective strategies to discourage people from over-consuming sugary drinks and fast food.” 25- regulations do change eating behavior,” Although this is true, it is more important to have our right to choose what we eat. By informing people of the hazards of consuming too many unhealthy food portions, this could possibly lower the high annual health care bill due to overconsumption of sugary drinks and fast food. More specifically, “If you want more than 16 ounces, no government official is stopping you from ordering as many of those sizes as you like.” This reveals that no person of authority should be able to tell someone the portion size of what people choose to eat and drink. As long as the sugary and fast foods are being consumed in moderation, this will lesson the issue of obesity and other health issues, which is ultimately why enforcing a regulation on what we eat and drink should not be implemented.

There was a vote by New York City's Board of Health in December 2006, that they would be the first city to ban the use trans fats. The new law, which officially went into effect in July of 2008, aims to eliminate the artery-clogging fat used in the preparation of many popular food items around the city, including pizza, French fries, and various baked goods. Trans fats are much easier to transport and ship than other oils and fats due to their unique solid state. Although yet, trans fats can raise our level of “bad” cholesterol while also lowering our “good” cholesterol levels, both of which can contribute to heart disease. Advocates that support the ban on trans fats are quick to point out the negative health effects of consuming food prepared with the banned item.
Various products have their disadvantages but they do come with several advantages. Bert Glass states that, “...trans fats are instrumental in creating a specific taste and texture in many foods that some consumers find desirable. Trans fats are also much easier to transport and ship than the other oils and fats due to their unique solid state”(Glass paragraph 38). Although this may be true, because of its desirable flavor, it brings in more buyers and those buyers end up consuming more and more. This can contribute to many health issues like bad cholesterol and heart disease just because people have become in a way addicted to specific products. By including regulations, many health issues wouldn’t be such a problem since there would be boundaries to keep people in good standards.

Opposing viewers feel it is a bad idea to let the government have a say in what the citizens of America eat . If the government regulates the food our community eats ultimately puts our values, our rights and our freedom in a terrible position. But in 2008 New York City’s put a ban on hydrogenated oils containing trans fat means New Yorkers get less trans fat then other cities and it hasn't seem to affect anyone in the wrong way. In all, the government having a say in what the citizens eat does not look bad in certain point of views. The government regulating what the US as a whole eats will have many beneficial factors in the future to come.

Even though these reasons are here to support government having food restrictions, some are still skeptical. “ When faced with the facts about the dangers of consuming foods prepared with trans fats, shouldn’t it ultimately be each citizen’s right to choose whether or not to consume foods prepared with the controversial item?” (Source 2) Although it may be your choice, the majority of people in the U.S will benefit from the government regulating foods. Obesity is a major problem in our society, and the government regulating foods would help with this problem. Millions of tax dollars go towards fighting this, and with government regulations, we could put that money towards more important and beneficial things. We must put the needs of the majority before the wants of the minority.
