Dialysis keeps a safe level of chemicals in the blood including sodium, potassium, and bicarbonate. It is also used to help regulate blood pressure in patients with end stage renal disease.

In the US, the annual incidence is 336 per 1,000,000 population. 

The rise in ESRD most likely reflects the global epidemic of Type 2 Diabetes and aging.  
The cost of dialysis poses a great challenge to provision of care.
