This scence is very similar to the scence where the boys discuss their future goals. The other veterans are clearly sheepish when it comes to talking about the future. This is shown through the quote, " Chrissie would have never herself talked about working in an office." Ruth, like the fantasizing boys, allows her mind to drift and talks about her future. Other people act similarly to the cautious, empathetic teacher as they ar weary of discussing their futures and instead aware of their eventual fate. The teacher, Miss Lucy warns the boys earlier in the book: "' Theres just too much talk like this."' (60, pt i) her hesitance is very similar to that of Chrissies. This scene is very similar to the discussion of futures in pt one of the book in both theme and charachter roles.

This is similar to the scene where Ruth and her friends were talking about where Ruth got here pencil case. This is similar because in both scenes, she is describing a sort of fantasy; she is ditching reality and is telling lies to convince others. In part 2, Ruth is trying to capture the attention of the veterans, mainly Chrissie and Rodney. She is describing her dream workplace; her ideal fantasy and is verging away from reality. In part 1, she is capturing the attention of her Hailsham friends and is also verging from reality because Kathy noticed that this is not possible.

I find that this moment in the book shares similar qualities to that of Ms. Lucy informing the students at Hail sham that their future is to be a carer. The students dream of what couldve been only to find that they will be donors.
