I don't believe that  what he did was completely right or completely wrong.  In this case, it was either to kill, or to be killed. Now, even though the dog might've been bothering the kangaroo, the dog did have more emotional value to the man than the kangaroo did. You shouldn't really hurt kangaroos, and one dog dying wouldn't really make a difference, but sometimes we as people, defend what we love and is close to our hearts. If he didn't protect his dog, the dog would've ended up dead. To avoid any of this happening, the man could have simply left his dog at home. In the end, none of the animals were badly harmed and that's what really matters in the end.

While it can be said that the kangaroo could have been acting in its defense, it was based on instinct. The man acted out based on his knowledge of kangaroos. Kangaroos are known to be very strong fighters. Their kicks and punches can easily wound the average person in a lethal way. The mere punch of that man was not enough to cause significant damage to the kickboxing strength of the kangaroo.
