T-S Text to Self

I can relate to the section that discussed the need for exercise. I was fortunate to grow up in Canada and recess was a major part of the school. I benefited both physically and socially during this period. It was a bit of culture shock when I moved back to the States and remained in classes all day and was not given the opportunity to leave campus. I believe I was able to become a better citizen and responsible of my time. Given the opportunity to go out for lunch and having to sign in and out I provided the need for me to make it back to school on time for the end of recess and/or lunch. Playing a variety of team sports gave me opportunities to both accept loss as well as work within a group to obtain a common goal. Many of my positive memories during my school time at Garrison Road and Lakeshore Catholic were within the free periods that allowed me to get moving and let off some steam.

? Question/Confusion

I previously did research upon the impact of recess and allotted free time for students during the school day for my Master's research paper. A lot of research indicates clear support in developing the necessary soft-skills that students need to develop in order to increase success once completed with school. It makes me wonder why it is not more of a universally used tool. In many cases it is left to school districts to decide rather than something federally mandated or even the state seeks to push out. It makes me wonder that after reading the quote "policymakers say they have taken these severe measures because there is just too much work to do in school and not enough time to do it," what work is truly necessary? These policymakers can assess what is being done and see what is the most important education-wise and see what really is superfluous. By cutting some of the fat, there can be time to allow students to engage in physical activity or given a moment to interact socially outside of the classroom setting for more than the time passing in the halls or during a lunch period.

* - This is important

The quote that ended the Exercise section felt important to me because it relates to a joking statement I often make but addresses the physiological reasoning for getting outside and moving. The line was, "Oxygen flowing to our brains helps keep us cheerful and engaging, and that is good not only for us, but also for the children." The joke I often say is the best drug is a little combination of laughter and oxygen. In many cases recess allows for both of these to blend quite well.
