“They are encouraged to separate themselves from their neoindiginous culture in order to “make it out of the hood” rather than celebrate what their histories, neighborhoods, and home communities have to offer. These students spend their entire lives copying another person’s culture and looking down on their own” (Emdin, 2016, p. 177).

Emdin expresses that teachers are constantly encouraging black students to leave the hood they were raised in, because there is a better way of life out there for them. Society makes it seem like the lifestyles of most neoindiginous students are not good. Therefore, these students spend their lives trying to get away from who they are and where they came from, simply because, they were taught that it was bad. I chose this picture here because, it accurately represents how society views black people when they interview for jobs. The idea that someone is acting “white” can mean a variety of things, but in this meme, acting white is associated with being sophisticated or professional. Unfortunately, society has stereotyped the way black and white people are known to act. In this case, acting white is beneficial, and is associated with succeeding. As teachers, we should not encourage our students to act white, but rather like the best versions of themselves. We should encourage them to embrace who they are, and not change that based on the racial stereotypes of the world.

"I argue for an authentic code switching that involves valuing oneself and one’s culture while appreciating and understanding the codes of other culture” (Emdin, 2016, p. 178).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ysye3RTUSio

In the movie Remember the Titans, black and white teammates struggle to connect with each other due to the time period of the Civil Rights Movement. Throughout the movie, the teammates grow to be like brothers. They learn to accept each other and value one another’s cultures. I chose this video, because I believe it reveals black and white friends coming together and sharing each other’s cultures by telling “yo mama” jokes, and singing a hit song. Here, they display an authentic relationship, like Emdin describes in chapter 10. You see that the interactions seem very natural and positive. This shows that these different types of people came together, and genuinely got to know and appreciate one another. This is something that all teachers should strive to do and encourage in their classrooms.
