   (Carmen) c. This poster for the series Game of Thrones’s season four shows, in a very extreme shot, often used to add drama to a scene, the eye of one of Daenerys dragons, (she’s the one of the main characters). Her dragons are an iconic part of the series and they are an essential part of the show, representative of the story and plot. The colors of the poster is overall dark and in grayscale, so darker darker grays and blacks overall, but the contracted iris shows how the animal is alert, ready to maybe fight it’s opponents, and it’s shown colored in red: red usually represents danger and anger, and what’s also colored in red is the sort of subtitle written on top of the series name, “ALL MEN MUST DIE”. The main focus of this poster, what’s shown in light and color, is the eye. The poster looks like a book cover with the embroidered margins and corners, so it takes back to the original form of the series which is a book series.

The unsettling atmosphere and the mystery is depicted through the fact that we do not know what we are looking at when we look at the poster. All we can see is a big eye, surrounded by scales so it must be a reptile, however we can’t be 100% sure of what it is if we have not ever watched Game Of Thrones. We can also read ‘ALL MEN MUST DIE’ and it makes the public wonder ‘why?’, it leaves a touch of mystery and it lures the public. 

The rational and irrational is depicted here thanks to the message written in red. This message, said by Daenerys, saying that all men have to die, is very surprising, and can be described as irrational because who would want everyone in this world to die? This message would seem very strange to the public so they would feel attracted to discover what this truly means, to discover this irrational sentence.

We have it pretty clear that the blood imagery is represented in this poster: we can observe a drop of blood in the eye of what we could think is some sort of reptile, and the message saying ‘ALL MEN MUST DIE’ is written in red. The blood imagery represents violence and death (specifically the arrival of the white walkers). It can also represent and thanks to this we can expect something big to happen in this season (which is the rise of Daenerys’ power, the arrival of the white walkers and the endangerment of the iron throne), as the message and the presence of blood makes the poster even more interesting.

This doc belongs to the axe of Scary imaginations. Indeed, it’s a horror story that talks about ghosts, possession, a boy who can see ghosts and many other scary and supernatural things. There is also violence :  we can see dead people and blood…

Director :
Stanley Kubrick = Born in July 26, 1928 and dead in March 7, 1999, he was an American film director, producer, screenwriter, and photographer. Widely considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, his films, almost all of which are adaptations of novels or short stories, cover a wide range of genres and are noted for their innovative cinematography, dark humor, realistic attention to detail and extensive set designs.

Context and inspiration:

The film was released in the United States on May 23, 1980.

It was based on Stephen King’s novel The Shining published in 1977

Jack Nicholson : Jack Torrance = the father who becomes crazy due to the haunted hotel. He’s possessed by the house’s spirit. 

Shelley Duvall : Wendy Torrance= Jack Torrance’s wife persecuted by her husband. 

Danny Lloyd : Danny Torrance = Jack and Wendy’s son. He can see the ghosts before they become real. He is the one who realises that his father is possessed. 

Scatman Crothers : Dick Hallorann= the owner of the hotel.

The film's main character is Jack Torrance, an aspiring writer and recovering alcoholic who accepts a position as the winter caretaker of the isolated Overlook Hotel, with his wife, Wendy Torrance, and his young son, Danny Torrance. Danny is gifted with psychic abilities named "shining". After a winter storm leaves the Torrances snowbound, Jack's sanity deteriorates due to the influence of the supernatural forces that inhabit the hotel.

The picture takes place on the wall, we know the movie happens in a hotel and that scene is in a room. The image suggests the man at the left is chasing the woman with an axe. 
In the background there is a scared woman with a knife. She looks desperate. She doesn’t seem to have a way out. The medium shot of the woman allows the viewer to see the background environment that’s white and the character’s gestures. 
On the left-hand side of the picture there is an extreme close shot of man’s face that adds drama to the scene and accentuates the emotions that the subject is experiencing. It seems he finds these exciting, he looks like a psychopath. The reddish tones on the skin suggest danger and violence.

The atmosphere is horrible, and violent. His eyebrows are raised and with his mouth open he shows all his teeth. The image is striking, presenting the characters of the story. It also allows the viewer to wonder how this is happening.

Suspense is a feeling of fascination and excitement mixed with tension and anxiety. The audience is waiting for something significant to happen. 
The suspense depends of several factors

In this film, Danny possesses psychic abilities and he’s able to see things from the past and future, such as ghosts or the people who inhabit the hotel. Some time after the settling the family is trapped  in the hotel by a snowstorm and Jack (the father) gradually becomes influenced by a supernatural presence and finally attempts to murder his wife and child.    

Moreover, in the typewriter scene, the camera angles give the impression of someone watching the wife, and the close-up shows Wendy’s fear.
The theme of madness (feeling of paranoia, psychopaths, fears, obsessions)

The story portrays the character of Jack Torrance, a writer who develops alarming symptoms which point to schizophrenia such as horrid and vivid nightmares and mood swings that intensify into vivid hallucinations and violence culminating in an attempted murder of his own wife and child. 
This behaviour is also evident in his work when he repeats a line that says ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’ nonsensically throughout all the pages he had written. (to make the point with the suspense theme).

For me this document is in the scary imaginations because.:

-Zombie scare people

-Zombie doesn't exist

-Zombie are usually in horror movies

-Nothing of this can truly happen  

In the music video, Michael was inspired by the horror-comedy film “An American Werewolf in London”. The movie's director John Landis worked with Michael to create a concept for the 'Thriller' video and also worked as the director on the shoot to help execute a clearer vision of what Michael wanted to precisely show,  the effect he wanted to produce. The writer and composer of the song was Rod Temperton (in 1982).

The actors in the video are: Vincent Price, Michael Jackson, Ola Ray, Michael DeLorenzo and Ben Lokey.

The music video tells the story of how a double-date night at the movies turns into a nightmare. Michael and his date are attacked by a horde of bloodthirsty zombies and supposedly, only a "Thriller" can save them now. Michael was already very famous at the time and his song “Thriller” had a big impact at the time; sealed MTV's reputation as a new cultural force. They considered it dissolved racial barriers in the station's treatment of music.

The first clip was announced as a "World Premiere" on MTV and this was broadcast on December 2, 1983.

The reviews of the music video are great meanwhile the ones from the movie are awful.

reviews: “Quite possibly the most cliche ridden horror movie of the century so far, which is quite a feat considering the screenplay is so underwritten. There is not a single redeemable character here, or a half developed one. Some people should never get a second chance at filmmaking, the writer/director here should top that list. Halfway decent, however there is no mistake, this is awful.”

We can see an example of the reviews people put on the internet, it is clear to see the movie is not liked by as many people as the song and music video are.

The theme of death (vega):  The power of the dead over the living is present in “Thriller'', both the movie and the music video, as we see that the zombies are the ones in power, the dominant ones, chasing the humans who are trying to escape from them. The dead (zombies) come out of the graves and leave the graveyard looking for people, they basically “come back to life” in a way and become the living dead. There is a representation of the obsession of the dead for the  living. As an example: Zombies surround the couple and won’t let them get away. Michael ends up turning into one of them, his girlfriend doesn’t though and she tries her best to escape him, the rest of the zombies and death. The theme of death is also strongly related to love as the main characters are a couple that were on a date at the movies before all that apocalypse takes place. Once Michael turns into a zombie, he goes after the girl he loves. However, the girl doesn’t trust him anymore, she’s scared of him.

 music/sounds:Thriller films as a rule usually have non-diegetic music playing in the background creating a sound bridge to create and determine the certain desired atmosphere. Orchestral music is also often used within thriller films. Normally in the scary music, they composed using key that change our mood and emotion.There also the suspenseful music that is also use, it s use to help to create the dramatic effect. The music builds tension and holds the audience's attention

The exploration of feelings (julia):  thriller, the poster shows us many feelings like , fear, agony, suspense, wonder, paranoia…. in the poster we can see michael jackson surrounded by many zombies who look scary, some more than others. The grotesque is here seen with the zombies who are the opposite of beauty. grotesque is something exaggerated, horrific, everything that could live in the shadow world. like monsters…. we have a point of view shot, the one of the person looking at it, who is trying to figure out what is the meaning of all this decoration , of all the details drawn and what are his feelings for it.and last but not least psychological novel; we can find its principal characteristics like anxiety, fear and mental conflicts. which we all feel while looking at the picture.
