What program did you put in place to address your school's needs?

At Elizabeth Davis Middle School we have incorportated academic support during the regular school day. This takes place during our SOAR class which is 30 minutes each day. During this time teachers deliver social emotional lessons as well as remediation. This time can be used for students to complete missing assignments and get help from their teacher with topics they are struggling with.

What theme or slogan did you create for this program?

SOAR class is for students to be able to get their extra help they need to be successful as well as for teachers to develop meaningful and authentic relationships. Our slogan is that we must go slow to go fast. We want students to be successful in all of their classes, but in order for that to happen they need to have a good relationship with their teachers. If we start the year slow by getting to know one another and learn how to work as a team, then the learning will happen quicker than we anticpated.

The best predictor of student success is the extent to which families encourage learning at home and involve themselves in their child’s education. "Parental involvement is essential for student development and offers many benefits" ( Delgado, 2019). Elizabeth Davis Middle School encourages and expects teachers to communicate with parents about their student's progress. There are also planned events where parents are invited to the school to participate in activities so the parents can learn how to best help their children in school. This information is also being presented in Spanish since our Hispanic population is growing exponentially.

As a leadership team we reached out to local businesses such as Sheetz, WaWa, Dunkin Donuts to donate incentives for students reaching their goals. We also had a Grand Canyon Univeristy come for teachers to learn about programs they offer to continue their education. Finally, students from the govenor school came to tutor struggling students for their community service hours.
