- Structural, macro and consensus theory
- functionalists have been accused of having old fashioned view.
- society operates on a value consensus
- belief that the education system is meritocratic. Marxists argue that this is a myth.

functions of the education system according to functionalists.
1. Bridge - Parsons argue the education system is a bridge between the family and wider society .
2) Role allocation- Davis & Moore argue that education system selects and allocated pupils to their future work roles. Marxists reject this claim and argue that it's no the most talented bu the most privileged.
3) Economic Function- Modern societies have a complex division of labour where people need specialist skills
4) Social control- Both in school and in the workplace, we have to cooperate with people who are neither friends no family. Marxists are critical of this point and claim that the education system persuades working = class pupils to accept working-class jobs which is boring and monotonous.

- Bowles and Gintis argue that capitalism requires a workforce with the kinds of
attitudes behavior and personalities suited to their role as alienated and exploited workers who accept low pay, hard work and orders from above.

- Both school and work have hierarchies, rules and work for rewards.

- correspondence principle - the structures found in the education system that mirror that of the workplace.

-The hidden curriculum - all the lessons learnt in school that aren't
directly taught.

- a strength of Marxism is that it is useful in exposing the myth of meritocracy.

- Marxism has been criticized
for placing too much
emphasis on class inequalities and ignoring other aspects such as ethnicity, gender and sexuality
