  • During Empress Anna's reign, St. Petersburg was developed even further with several canals being constructed. Foreign nationalities such as Germans and various Eastern Europeans  began to merge with the Russian nobility during her reign. Anna also sponsored the Russian Academy of Sciences, which was responsible for expeditions in Russia's far east.

Elizabeth also was a patron of architecture, developing the Winter Palace and Peterhof to a great degree. During Elizabeth's reign, Russia became quite involved in the Seven Years' War, and sided with France, Austria, and Saxony against Prussia, Britain, and Hannover. Russia was extremely successful in the war, defeating the army of Frederick the Great at the Battle of Kunersdorf in East Prussia. Among Catherine's actions were secularizing the properties of the clergy,  declaring war on the Ottomans, partitioning Poland, suppressed a Cossack rebellion, introduced a new legal code, and most importantly brought great scientific advances to Russia, furthering Peter The Great's vision for Russia.
