GREETINGS FROM DR. C! Greetings everyone and welcome to RSCH 504. I live in Asheville,North Carolina, and, spring in the Great Smokey Mountains (from where I teach) is so very beautiful. I often walk my dog, Smoke, in the woods and enjoy the fresh air and all of the sights and sounds of nature.I am looking forward to working with each of you toward a very fulfilling PICOT project paper. Please be certain to answer these 5 questions:1) Your name and geographical location2) What is your current area of practice and what educational Track you are currently in at CNHP) What (if any) is your experience and level of expertise with Evidence Based Practice (*some students come from facilities or jobs with significant exposure/experience and others have no encounters with EBP at all. EITHER is just fine! This question just gives me some insight into the various levels of experience)4). What do you hope to learn/glean from this course?5) What concerns or apprehensions do you have about taking a research course such as this? Also, as we are building a community, please feel free to use the "Wild Card" (#6) to post one of your favorite photos. For example, this is a photo of a trip to Bolivia in 2011 with a team from Drexel CNHP. Since I am a forensic practitioner, my role was to work with psychologists, prosecutors and judges regarding enhanced assessment of children exposed to sexual violence. Here I am working with children in the school room of their Domestic Violence Shelter/compound (located at over 12 thousand feet in the Andes mountain range!). I got to meet quite a few alpaca during that time :-)I look forward to learning more about each of you."See" you in class,Dr. C

Hello everyone,I am Jordan Greer and I reside in King of Prussia, PA just outside of Philadelphia. I currently practice coordinating care of joint replacement patients during the perioperative phase. I am currently in year one of the family nurse practitioner track. I have had one undergraduate course in research in addition the prerequisite for this course. I assist in reviewing scholarly journal articles to help shape our joint replacement program guidelines. We focus on topics such as best practice standards for bilateral joint replacements, DVT prophylaxis, and guidelines for spinal anesthesia. I do enjoy research and EBP as I feel it is a wonderful way to gain knowledge regarding current practices. I must confess the coursework often seems intense, however it pays off in the end. Wildcard, I love to travel! Later this month I will travel to Europe. The trip is being planned by someone else and I will not know where we are going until I get on the flight. I left one stipulation… internet for these courses. Below is a photo of Big Sur, a trip I took in October.

Hi everyone, I am Ashley Lange I reside in the Morristown Area of NJ. This is my fourth class in my MSN Business and Leadership In Healthcare course. Currently I work as a Clinical Coordinator in a large multi-specialty practice where I work with 10 physicians and 3 APNS and supervise 15 CMA's and 2 LPN's. I don't have too much experience with EBP. I am slightly anxious for this course but I think it will expand my knowledge base tremendously. Wild Card is that I love to travel yet am pretty terrified of flying! I'm currently planning a road trip from San Fran down to San Diego in September and then an AZ trip from Phx (my brother lives there) to Sedona and possibly hit Zion while I'm down there in December. Below's a pic from my last trip to AZ at Horseshoe Bend in Page, AZ. (Zoom out to see the whole pic).

I have been working as an emergency room RN for the past 6 years, my first year out of nursing school was in an acute rehab facility. I am a currently working as a charge nurse in a community hospital in Bergen County, NJ. We do not have a formal EBP group in my department yet, but management is pushing for us to form a committee to start promoting EBP within the hospital. I hope to present my department with my chosen PICOT question for this class to apply as a potential practice change within the ER. Wild card- I currently live with my boyfriend, our cat, and dog in Saddle River, NJ. We were fortunate enough to get our dream house that we have been after for the past 4 years. This is a picture of my new happy place. Luckily the internet reaches this patio so I hope to be writing my PICOT papers there!

I currently live in Cherry Hill with my husband Ryan and our cat Bubba! lol! I have been an ICU nurse from the start. I started in a small community hospital in Woodbury, NJ and then transitioned 3 years ago to Cooper in Camden.

I am currently enrolled in Drexel's MSN for Nursing Education/Faculty program. I was initially in the NP program but realized that route in life was not for me. The only EBP experience that I can say I have pertains to the usual carrying out of bedside practice that happens at the bedside. Learning about the evidence based practice behind all of the new implementations we experience every year in healthcare is really my only experience. I have taken 1 research class previously at Rowan University, but did not focus on an evidence based practice project.

I hope to learn to enjoy research in this class. I think for me its hard to stay excited in previous research classes, but I feel like if we are focusing on a project that pertains to my every day practice it will be much different for me.

Concerns I have include trying to fully understand what is required of me. Reading that syllabus at this point in time I feel lost because I have never even heard of a PICOT before! So I'm hoping this class isn't as challenging for me as I'm thinking.

I currently work as an OR nurse at Reading Hospital. I live with my husband and 2 1/2 year old twins! My life can be very hectic at times! My previous nursing experience includes emergency room nursing. I'm currently enrolled in the FNP program. I personally do not have much experience with formal EBP as this topic is not communicated about much in the preoperative division. I hope that I can learn effective tools for forming a PICOT question and how to formulate a great paper! I always have felt as though paper writing has been a weakness for me (either I write too little or I elaborate so much that I have too much!) My only concern about this class is the amount of work and time that may be required because the other class that I am taking (pharmacology) will take up a lot of my free (and I use that term loosely! Haha!) time. Strategies for time management for the paper may be helpful for me! Good luck to everyone this term and I can't wait to meet you all!

Hey everybody my name is John McSparran and I live in southern NJ right outside of Philadelphia. Recently I retired from the bedside as a critical care nurse to continue my full time nurse anesthesia program. I am in the Our Lady of Lourdes program. I am just coming up on completing my first year and already cannot wait to be completed. I have a decent amount of experience with evidence based practice from my previous job on the CCU at one of the main university hospitals in Philly. through EBP we implemented a lot of different programs to improve patient outcomes. For my unit I was responsible for implementing the SPEACS-2 program which focused on improving communication with non verbal patients. Thats pretty much as far as my exposure to EBP goes. As far as anesthesia goes I am extremely interested in the EBP behind it because many anesthesia providers have their own way of doing things and are very set in their ways even if there is no documentation of the evidence behind their madness. So I hope to learn a little bit more about research, how to research in practice and maybe even how to implement a thing or two. My concerns or worries are that this course may take a great deal of time and take me away from my anesthesia courses (although I probably need it). My other concern is that I am far from an english major and not the best at writing. As my wild card I wish I had such a great view from my office as Dr. C does...maybe one day. I took this picture at an alpine lake when I was hiking in Colorado last summer. It was such a beautiful view and often when I need to relax I close my eyes and imagine myself back there. Good luck with the semester everyone.

Hi everyone! My name is LeeAnn and I am currently a Psychiatric Nurse on an inpatient unit at Johns Hopkins Bayview Hospital. I have 10 courses left to complete my MSN degree in Nursing Leadership.
My experience with evidence based practice is at a moderate level. I was on the hospital EBP research committee at my last job and I had a great mentor who really specialized in EBP research. She has since retired. I love reading research articles and working towards making changes in clinical practice to reflect the most up to date evidence. I am finding however, that it is very difficult to implement change in the work environment. I really think that having leadership/management on board is key to being able to implement changes in practice.
However, I will say that even though I am a very strong advocate for evidence based practice, I think that it is very important to individualize treatment. Being that we are complex human beings, it is not always possible to link evidence with practice. We can't forget about clinical judgment and a holistic approach to treatment. Nursing is both an art and a science. I think EBP speaks to the science of nursing but may at times fail to integrate the art.
I hope to learn how to search academic literature in the most effective way. I often struggle with finding the correct search terms to direct my research papers. I either end up with too much information or too little.
My concern in taking the course is work/life/balance. I work full-time and have a husband, 4 daughters (ages 4, 9, 10, and 12) and a dog. Nonetheless, I am passionate about taking research and transitioning it into practice so I'm looking forward to learning more about EBP.

Hi everyone, My name is Elizabeth and I live in Audubon, NJ. I work in a city hospital emergency room in Delaware. I am in the nurse educator path. I have some experience with EBP as I am a member of my unit's quality and safety council where we try to educate and implement evidence into changes for safe practice.
I hope to learn how to understand how to formulate PICOT questions and apply them to my daily practice to question care in order to improve. At the same time, after reading the syllabus, this seems like an intense project which I am a little nervous about.

Something about me is that I am recently engaged and have been planning my wedding along with school and working full time.

Hi everyone! My name is Tess Schneider and I live in Philadelphia. I am originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, and completed my Bachelor’s in Nursing at Villanova. I currently work at Bryn Mawr Hospital in the department of nursing administration as a “SWAT” nurse, meaning that I float between the different units and procedural areas and work directly with the nursing supervisors to help support staff during off-shifts.
I am pursing my MSN in Leadership in Health Systems Management here at Drexel. I have taken several research classes in the past, most recently through the University of Pennsylvania as a non-matriculated graduate course. Additionally, I have worked on several EBP projects, first as an independent study during my undergraduate program, and then completed another as a component of my nurse residency program.
From this course, I hope to gain a better understanding of the research process and to learn how to ultimately develop a project worthy of dissemination. I know that research courses have a tendency to be overwhelming, which does make me nervous as we enter this course, but I hope that we are taught to use our resources systematically to make the literature seem a little less intimidating.
As my wildcard, I love to travel, and I am actually going to Mexico this weekend with some old coworkers! I’m very excited for that, and I’m also excited to get to know you all throughout this quarter.

Best!

Tess

Hello everyone! My name is Lisa Antonelli and I live in Philadelphia, PA. I have been working on a hematology/oncology unit in a center city hospital for the last 5 years. I am also an adjunct clinical instructor for a local university. I am enrolled in the MSN Clinical Nurse Leader track. I have minimal experience in EBP and am hoping to grasp a better understanding of these concepts during this course as I am currently a primary investigator in a study at my place of employment. I remember the PICOT question when I was pursuing my undergraduate degree, and I remember it was a bit daunting, so I am nervous about that. Good luck to everyone for this term!
