After reading the description on page 2, I have a better understanding. It also confirmed that I am doing this in my classroom. I use a range of different technologies. I use things like the SMARTboard, and iPads, chrome books, and more!

In this section it made me think about how I integrate technology into my classroom. I like that it said, when digital technologies are integrated into literacy instruction, they become part of the teaching and the learning process that leads to the attainment of literacy skills. It goes on to say that it's important to recognize that when digital technology is integrated into literacy, the goal is still to help students became literate. The focus is not on the technology, but on the literacy goals. I think it's important to keep this in mind. In second grade, they are using chrome books everyday and when they are having trouble with typing a word, I need to remember that they aren't necessarily struggling with the words, they are struggling with the technology and that it will develop with time and exposure.

In this section, it says that students employ technology thoughtfully to enhance their reading, writing, listening, and language use. This is part of the description of the CCSS for students who meet the standards. This stuck out to me because we aren't just using technology with students to get them ready for future jobs that will use a ton of technology, but we are also using technology in the classroom in ENHANCE our students reading, writing, math, listening and language arts skills. There are so many amazing things you can do with technology in the classroom and I can't wait to learn even more in this class.

In this section it talked about Vasind and McLeod and not they had their students digitally record themselves reading a readers theatre script and then upload it onto a podcasting or blogging site. I love this idea. It goes on to say that the students then could evaluate their own reading fluency, and revise and improve their work. I am connecting this to some of my STEM education because in the Engineering the design process, it is a very important part for the students to test and evaluate their work to improve on it! Having students self evaluate their reading seems very important to me. I will definitely be doing something like this is my classroom. Very fun!

Digital Technology Changes What it Means to be Literate

In this section it talks about what students must know intruder to be successful online readers. One of those being about to critically evaluate information and being able to sort out accurate information from inaccurate information. I think this is so important. Online, you need to be careful about where you are getting information from. I can be bias or the wrong information. I think about Facebook right now and how Mac Miller (a rapper) just passed away form an overdose. Everyone online is blaming Ariana Grande, his ex girlfriend, for the death. When someone thinks something, they can just post it online and it can go viral, whether it's the truth or not. Students need to learn how to sort out accurate and inaccurate information online. This also makes me think about text messages and now many "fights" I got into with friends in high school because of texting and how you read a response. It's hard to portray the someone is thinking and how they mean something through a text message, and it's important for students to learn these skills. Adding graphics, and photos, colors, and the layout of an online post can change the meaning.

Adults have the responsibility to protect and empower children to be responsible digital citizens. Rubble and Bailey's Nine Elements of Digital Citizenship is illustrated in a fun way with the video linked below. This makes me think about my classroom and how we use technology every single day. I have a poster the tells students how to be a digital citizen, We talk about these in my classroom as well as in the library to re-enforce of how important it is to be a good digital citizen.
