Surrounded by high walls and barbed wire, the Jewish ghettoes in Poland acted like captive city-states, governed by Jewish Councils. They had to remain quiet during daytime to avoid being found by the people working in the warehouse below. When Otto Frank, Anne's father, returned to Amsterdam following his release from Auschwitz, Miep Gies, an employee of Otto, gave him five notebooks and some 300 loose papers containing Anne’s writings, one of which was Anne's legendary diary. The following day, he committed suicide. Germany’s formal surrender in World War II came barely a week later, on May 8, 1945 after the Soviet forces liberated the concentrations camps.
