In the same novel, Mrs. Baker was a static character who didn't change throughout the novel. She was a steady character throughout the book. Our perception of her changes, though, as we get to know her, but she is a consistent character who cares about her students from the beginning to the end. She could have just let Holling sit and be bored during their Wednesday time together, but instead she decides to invest in him and push him by reading Shakespeare. We see that as he has a final conversation with his dad after the Barmitzvah. His dad wants him to promise to take over the business, but Holling isn't ready to do that and tells his dad he will let him know who he is going to be when he knows himself.

Holling's Dad is motivated by wanting to provide for his family. Sometimes this motivation is misunderstood and the reader (and Holling) may think that the dad is selfish and greedy.
