💧 Through research, it’s been discovered that Sorsogon has closed two of its dump sites as these have been poorly operated and have begun to affect the quality of life of the people surrounding these areas.

💧 In the municipality of Prieto Diaz, water facilities have been deprived. Water is a high demand in the province of Sorsogon as it is used mainly for irrigation, power generation, and consumption, yet though it was so, Prieto Diaz is one of the many municipalities that is lacking enough water facilities to distribute to its citizens. Lack of water facilities or any access to water could eventually lead to a series of problems with regard to health and hygiene.

💧 Sorsogon is directly exposed to the Pacific Ocean where most of the typhoons that hit the Philippines come from. The entirety of Sorsogon is vulnerable to tropical cyclones and storm surges, extreme rainfall and flooding, fluctuating temperatures, and rising sea levels. In return, these climate-induced disasters affect the city’s capacity to achieve and sustain development as a whole.  

💧 Year by year, Sorsogon continues to find ways to actively combat climate change and has since then become a “model of disaster-resilient towns and cities by proactively addressing climate change and taking local actions,” according to architect and urban environmental planner Nathaniel von Einsiedel.

➡️ Other impacts of climate change include annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) losses, shifts in rainfall patterns and distribution, crop failures, threats to biodiversity and food security, public health risks, and adversely affecting vulnerable groups such as women and indigenous people.

  • Disaster Risk Reduction Plans: These plans help people become proactive when it comes to natural disasters as Sorsogon and its many municipalities are prone to typhoons and landslides.
  • GeoMapperPH: This tool that’s been newly developed is able to help many citizens before, during, and after natural disasters. It is equipped with tools that can help citizens recognize the impact of a natural calamity, contact LGUs and other government agencies, as well as detect the various activities that can help preserve the environment.

❌ Negative Impacts
  • The makers of this Padlet have collectively concluded that there is no negative impact on the aforementioned Technological Advancements, as they believe that these will help not only the Municipality of Prieto Diaz and the Province of Sorsogon, but the rest of the Philippines where typhoons are likely to cause disasters.

Taking note that water in Sorsogon is not only for consumption, but also for irrigation and power generation, it nearly comes to no surprise that water would become one of Prieto Diaz’s most obvious deprivation.

  • Irrigation dam for farmers in Carayat, Prieto Diaz → government funded

✅ Positive Impacts 
  • Solid Waste Management: Protects the environment and its biodiversity as it encourages recycling and reduces pollution.
  • Irrigation: Irrigation dams can reduce erosion risk and increase opportunities for enhancing biodiversity values.
  • Water facilities: Water facilities increase access to water and reduce the risk of catching water-borne diseases.

❌ Negative Impacts
  • Landfills: As the waste is buried underground, it could still cause land and air pollution as the trash buried underneath could contaminate the land as well as water should there be one nearby 
  • Irrigation: Irrigation dams could also affect the landscape values as well as increasing the risk for contamination of ground and surface water
