The use of hyperbole in this quote emphasises how overwhelmed Stephen feels about all the secrets he has to keep from Keith. The context of this quote is that Stephen feels as if he would not be able to take keeping another secret, this makes the quote thought-provoking. The word "burst" means to break open or to issue forth suddenly and forcibly, in this quote it shows that Stephen is near breaking point due to the stress he's been put under by Keith and the investigation.

"If only I had a knotted rope..."

The use of ellipsis by Stephen is to show his train of thoughts throughout the story. This is effective as it shows the reader what is happening in Stephen consciousness. It also shows us that Stephen is panicking in this situation so he tries to think of what to do.

" And what am I going to do?"
The question mark in a rhetorical question is usually used to create a dramatic effect or sometimes, create tension between the character themselves or the character and the reader. The term "and" foreshadows the slow pace of his speech as Stephen is confused but also worried simultaneously. This effect is thought-provoking as it gets the readers anxious as to what he will do.

"The delicate white world around me evaporates"

The visual imagery used here brings attention to how beautiful the world around him looks at night. The use of the word "delicate" means fragile or easily damaged. This implies that this "white world" could disappear at any moment. The fact the world "evaporates" - meaning to disappear or fade - hints at how easily the "white world" can be damaged. This quote shows how pure the night is because Keith and Stephen have done nothing to corrupt it with their imaginary stories and their rash accusations at this point, thus contrasting with later on in the book.
